LEST WE FORGET 133 KEATING, Shane Patrick AFGHANISTAN Shane Patrick Keating was born on December 17, 1975, in Estevan, Saskatchewan. He lived in Dalmeny until grade 12 when he and his family moved to Saskatoon, where he graduated from Bishop Mahoney High School in 1994. He was a Member of the North Saskatchewan Regiment from 1993 to 1997, and then joined the regular forces. He was a member of the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, based in Shilo, Manitoba. Shane previously served two tours in Bosnia and had been stationed in Afghanistan since August 1, 2006. Cpl. Shane Keating died on September 18, 2006, at thirty years old. While handing out school supplies, toys, balls and biscuits to local children, Cpl. Keating and three other soldiers were killed by a suicide bicycle bomb attack in the Panjwaii district. A man travelling on a bicycle detonated his bomb near Canadian troops and several others were injured, including children. Two other members of the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry and a 2 Field Ambulance personnel were also killed in the blast. Pte. Favid Byers, Cpl. Keith Morley and 2 Field Ambulance Cpl. Glen Arnold. He is survived by his mother Judith, sisters Erin and Meghan, and brother Ken. His father Brian, a Saskatoon police officer, passed away several years prior. He enjoyed motorcycling, curling and good conversation. Shane was laid to rest in the military section of Saskatoon’s Woodlawn Cemetery. KELL, Harold Alan WWII Harold was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, in 1916. He joined the 8th Canadian RECCE Regiment, serving in England. He tried to join the Air Force with his twin brother, Les, but was initially rejected due to some color blindness, which was considered very critical for the air service. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Canwood Branch 132. Harold passed away in 1988.
