LEST WE FORGET 141 KNUTSON, Vincent Harold WWII Vincent was born in Swift Current in 1921, completed grade 12 at Lac Vert school and was farming with his family when he enlisted in Saskatoon in 1941. Flight Sergeant (RCAF navigator/bomb aimer) Vincent Harold Knutson was killed in action February 23, 1943, and is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial near London, England, for airmen from the north European theatre who died with no known grave. Knutson’s Wellington was shot down over the English Channel on a flight from No. 303 Ferry Training Unit. He was the only son of Caleb Hiram and Margaret (Pearson) Knutson who came from North Dakota to homestead NE21-22-13-W3 west of Beechy in 1911, moving to Lac Vert eleven years later. KVINLAUG, Laurence C. WWII Laurence was born in the Valbrand District on April 20, 1920. He joined the Saskatoon Light Infantry in 1941 and trained in Moose Jaw, SK, and Terrace, BC, and was then sent to England on the Queen Elizabeth. He was trained as a radio operator (Morse Code) and as a machine gunner, serving in Italy, Sicily and North Africa. He served under Montgomery for a short time, until he was wounded and moved to the Isle of White to recover. He was home to Valbrand and his family for Christmas 1945. Laurence passed away on March 17, 1994. KRIEGER, Shirley Durward WWII Shirley was born on September 15, 1912, in Alameda, Saskatchewan. Shirley enlisted with the Canadian Army on August 6, 1942, and served in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe until discharged on January 10, 1946. Shirley passed away on November 21, 1991.
