LEST WE FORGET 171 MacDONALD, Donald Kenneth “Ken” WWII Ken was born on April 27, 1919, on the family farm south of Carlyle. In September 1939, he enlisted with the South Saskatchewan Regiment and trained at Shilo, MB, Toronto, and Halifax. Ken participated in the Dieppe Raid, losing many friends and comrades. At Christmas 1943, Ken was assigned to the English Army to attend the Royal Military College at Camberley, where he graduated as a lieutenant of the Canadian Army. On December 20, 1944, during a raid on a German position, Ken was wounded. He was discharged on May 25, 1945. Ken and his wife, Dorothy, spent the rest of their working years at the family farm. Dorothy passed away on March 7, 1992, and Ken passed away on January 9, 1999, after a valiant battle with cancer. MacDONALD, John David WWII John was born in 1915 in Zealandia, Saskatchewan. He enlisted with the Canadian Army Active on July 14, 1942. He was a member of the 10th Field Squadron of the Royal Canadian Engineers; also known as the “Sappers”. The Engineers broke all time speed records in repairing, building, and destroying roads and bridges in Italy. He received his discharge on March 20, 1946 in Regina. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the 1939-1945 Star, War Medal 1939-1945 and the Italy Star. He was a member of the Rabbit Lake and Spiritwood Branches of The Royal Canadian Legion. John passed away in May 1988. MacDONALD, Glen Grant WWII Glen was born on September 12, 1924, on the family farm south of Carlyle. He spent some time on the farm with his father before joining the Regina Rifles in early 1944. Private MacDonald trained in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and Shilo, Manitoba. Towards the end of 1944, he was sent from Shilo to Halifax where he boarded a troop ship for overseas. Before he saw any action, peace was declared and he was sent home. He returned to working on the farm for a short time but decided to go to Rossland, BC. In 1953, Glen, his wife Kay, and children returned to Saskatchewan. Glen passed away January 26, 1997.
