LEST WE FORGET 115 HEKELAAR, Harry WWII Private Harry Hekelaar, born in 1919, of Meskanaw was killed in action, April 4 1945, in an ambush at Bissendorf and is buried at Holten Canadian War Cemetery in Overijssel, Netherlands. His gravesite is particularly apt given his Dutch ancestry, he was the son of William and Wilhelmina C. Hekelaar who arrived in Meskanaw to farm in 1915. Harry, who farmed with his family, first enlisted in the Canadian Postal Corps in Saskatoon late in 1941, and left a bride, Frances Nellie Dorothy (Tanfield) in Forest Row, East Sussex, England. His sister Sue served in the Canadian Women’s Army Corps. HENRY, Robert Nelson WWII Henry was born in Wolverine, Saskatchewan on July 31, 1920. He enlisted in the Air Force on November 1, 1940 and served in Canada. He spent 58 months as an air frame mechanic, after training at Saskatoon, Toronto, St. Thomas Tech, St. Thomas, ON. He was stationed in Dauphin, Manitoba for four years. After the war, he helped to close out three stations. Upon his discharge on October 20, 1945, he returned to farming for 62 years. Henry passed away on February 27, 2008. HENRICKS, Peder M. WWII Peder was born in Outlook, Saskatchewan on March 6, 1921. He joined the 1st Battalion, Saskatoon Light Infantry, serving in the Italian Campaign for the liberation of Holland. He married Dorothy E.Warton in London on May 22, 1945, and had two children, Judith E. Hammond (Henricks), born on June 5, 1948, and Paul M. Henricks, born on December 8, 1951, both born in Saskatoon, SK. Peder was wounded in action on May 23, 1944, and received the Defence Medal, Italy Star, 1939-1945 Star, and France and Germany Star. Peder passed away on March 17, 2005.
