LEST WE FORGET 125 HUXLEY, Irwin WWII Irwin joined the Air Force in 1943 and served in Canada until 1945. He worked in Alberta lighting lanterns along the runway for planes to land and then put them out after they had landed safely. After the war he worked for the C.N.R. until he was laid off. He then purchased a filling station at Prince Albert, Saskatchewan known as Huxley’s Esso Service. IRWIN, Robert Hall WWI Robert Irwin Hall was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on May 14, 1889. His parents, Robert Simon and Janet A. Irwin, had two other sons: Charles (18871961) and George (1892-1971). The family moved west to Bounty, Saskatchewan. That was where Robert Hall Irwin was living when he enlisted on May 9, 1918, the age of 29, in Regina. He was a member of the 1st Depot Battalion of the Saskatchewan Regiment. Shortly after he enlisted, he was hospitalized in Regina Grey Nuns Hospital with influenza (Spanish Flu). All of his service was in Canada. He was discharged on February 27, 1919 and indicated his intention to return to Bounty. Census records show that he was living in Omega, Saskatchewan on June 1, 1921. He registered for a homestead in 1928. Robert married Jessie Kathleen McDougall in Swift Current on July 13, 1924. They moved to British Columbia around 1935. Prior to his death at the age of 66 in Esquimalt, BC on August 2, 1955, he had worked for fifteen years as a grocery manager. He is buried in the Royal Oak Cemetery. INGELL, Leslie Raymond WWII Leslie was born in 1922 in Porterville, California. His family returned to Macrorie, Saskatchewan in 1924. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942. He was trained as an Air Gunner and went overseas in 1943 and was attached to the Royal Air Force. He completed several bombing missions over Germany and was killed in action when his plane was shot down over Germany on March 24, 1944. He is buried in Reichswald Forest Cemetery in Germany near the Holland border. For his service to Canada, Les received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, King George VI Medal, The Air Crew Europe Star, and the 1939-1945 Star.
