LEST WE FORGET 135 KELLER, Bryce Jeffrey AFGHANISTAN Bryce Jeffrey Keller was born on May 27, 1979 and raised in Regina. He attended St. Bernadette School and Riffel High School. He joined the military in 1997 as a member of the 1st Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, based in Edmonton. Bryce was killed on August 3, 2006, at 27 years old. He died after a rocketpropelled grenade attack conducted by Taliban militants near the village of Pashmul. This attack occurred in a Taliban hotbed about 25 km west of Kandahar City. Two other members of same battalion were killed in the attack. Thirty-five-year-old Sgt. Vaughan Ingram and 22-year-old Kevin Dallaire also lost their lives during this attack. They were only weeks from completing their six-month tour. Six other soldiers were injured in the attack. In 2008, the Governor-General announced the posthumous award of the Medal of Military Valour to Cpl. Keller for his courage and leadership on August 3, 2006. On that day Keller sacrificed his life and saved the life of a critically injured soldier. Bryce was nicknamed “Smithers” by his military comrades. He and his wife, Cpl. Sarah Keller, met in 1998 on a military course in Kingston, Ontario. She is a medic with the Edmonton-based 1 Field Ambulance. Bryce was an animal lover and supported the Edmonton Humane Society. He had a dog named ‘Finn MacCool.’ He is survived by his parents and two brothers Scott and Bradley. Cpl. Keller was laid to rest on August 15, 2006, in Sherwood Park, Alberta. KENDALL, Joseph WWII Joseph was born on the family farm east of Macrorie, Saskatchewan, on December 30, 1925. He enlisted in the RCNVR in 1943 and trained and served on HMCS Unicorn, HMCS Discovery, HMCS Cornwallis and HMCS Stadacona in the DEMS Division as gunner in the South Pacific. For a while, he worked on the SS Mohawk Park out of Vancouver. He toured Australia, New Zealand and South America. Joe was discharged on November 21, 1945, as Able Seaman. He came back to Macrorie, where he helped his family farm and raised his family. He passed away on March 21, 2000. He was a very active member of his local Legion and was presented with a gold signet ring.
