LEST WE FORGET 57 BECK, John Douglas WWII John was born in Mawer, Saskatchewan on March 19, 1919, the son of Christian and Lulu Beck. He enlisted in the Air Force and served in Great Britain, France and Belgium as Air Frame Mechanic, Tactical Wing, Leading Aircraftman. He was posted to France shortly after D-Day 1944. His unit followed the advancing armies through France and Belgium. He was killed in an air raid on his air base on October 11, 1944. John is buried at the Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery in the Netherlands. BELL, John WWI John Bell of the 96th Battalion of the Canadian Highlanders was born in Glenarn, Victoria County, Ontario on May 22, 1880. His parents were John and Hanna (Petterson) Bell. John was living in Bounty, Saskatchewan and working as a blacksmith when he enlisted on May 25, 1916 in Saskatoon. He was 36 years old. John embarked from Halifax on September 27, 1916 and arrived in Liverpool on October 6. As a member of the 96th Battalion, all of his service was in England. John Bell left England for his home in Canada on May 1, 1919. He was discharged from his battalion on May 26, 1919 in Winnipeg. BECK, William Stanley WWII William was born in Mawer, Saskatchewan in 1923. After graduating high school in Mawer in 1942, William enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force, became a pilot, and was posted to England where he retrained to become a flight engineer and second pilot on Lancaster bombers. By that time, the European War ended and he was posted to Croft 431 Squadron near Darlington to fly bombers home to Canada. However, after six months waiting for an assignment, he returned to Canada on a troop ship.William passed away in March 2015.
