Military Service Recognition Book Volume 10 Manitoba & Northwestern Ontario Command
Lest We Forget
1 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND A Message from the President www.mbnwo.ca June 6, 2019 marked the 75th Anniversary of D-Day. The beginning of the end. On June 6, 1944 the world saw the beginning of the largest assault in history land on the Normandy beaches. Of the 156,000 troops to storm ashore that day, 14,000 were Canadian at Juno Beach. That day 359 Canadians were killed, 574 wounded and 47 captured. Every day we should remember those who went ashore on that historic day, some who never returned and those who did. Next year we will celebrate 75 years since V-E Day. We Will Remember Them. This is the 10th edition of the Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario Command, Military Service Recognition Book. It is intended as a tribute to all those who served or are serving. We recognize that without their sacrifice we would be unable to enjoy the freedoms that we now cherish. The stories in this book play a small part in our acknowledgement of their service. To all of you that submitted articles, ThankYou. To all of you who support our advertisers, ThankYou. To all of you who donated to our telephone appeal, ThankYou. Proceeds realized from this publication are used to fund various Legion programs and for that we Thank You all. 7 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND Fenety Marketing is very proud of its participation in the publication of The Royal Canadian Legion – Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario Command’s Annual Military Service Recognition Book. This is the 10th edition in the series devoted to recognizing Military and RCMP Members throughout Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. It is an honour to work with The Royal Canadian Legion on this historic series of books of remembrance, which commemorate the brave and faithful service of our Veterans, our heroes. We honour them all for their contributions and sacrifices which shaped our great country. I would like to thank the citizens and business owners of Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario who have supported this very worthwhile project of The Royal Canadian Legion, as it is their support that makes this legacy of The Royal Canadian Legion possible. “Lest We Forget” Mark T. Military Service Recognition Book Volume 10 8 Over 100 years caring for Veterans.... your sacrifices are not forgotten.
9 www.mbnwo.ca Bravely Met It began at dawn with weapons drawn, as battles often do. A tot of rum, the prayers done, it’s time to see it through. The whistles blow and off they go, hoping to fight well. Side by side with fear and pride they charged out into Hell. It’s quiet now among the crosses in pristine rows that mark our losses. Belying the horror of that long past dawn, Where they stood with weapons drawn. Past whispers of the silent prayers of all our soldiers everywhere, ask only that we not forget the battles past, so bravely met. H.A. SANDE Municipality of Neebing Lest e orget

11 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca Brief History of the Belgian Veterans’Association, Branch 107 The Belgian Veterans’ Association, Branch 107 originated on February 12, 1920. The Belgian Club has always been our home. The Branch was originally known as the British Empire Service League. On April 10, 1933 the name was changed to Belgian Veterans’Association with the first President Comrade Cornelius De Steene, Jules DeCruyenaere as Secretary with a membership of 10 Comrades. The membership reached 100 in 1930 with Julien Buysse as President. A Ladies Auxiliary was formed in 1926 and discontinued in 1964. In October 1937 under the chairmanship of then President Louis Nobel a fundraising committee was formed to erect a monument known as Albert Place. This monument was erected in front of the Belgian Club by sculptor Hubert Garnier. The models depicting the two Belgian soldiers were Jules DeCruyenaere (lying down) and Julien Buysse (standing) both deceased now. The monument is the only one depicting a fallen soldier. In April 1995, the monument was officially declared historical war memorial by the City of Winnipeg. DuringWorldWar II most members rejoined the Canadian or Belgian forces. The Ladies Auxiliary provided many comfort parcels to the Comrades overseas. Upon cessation of the War, the branch was very active with the return of many servicemen. Much credit goes to Louis Speliers for the resurgence of our branch to its present membership of 145. The branch accomplishment and contribution to The Royal Canadian Legion can best be exemplified by two of our Comrades, Father Leo Baert and Louis Speliers. The branch has also been honoured by two Comrades, Joe Beock, Paul Deprez and our present Belgian Consul Jean-Marie DeClercq. And to finish we can say that all the founding and charter members, and all the members today, and those that are gone have contributed to make The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 107 as it is today with over a hundred members and we are working to further the aims and objectives of this great organization. ~ Written by a member
