181 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca SANGSTER, William WWI William was born in 1897 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. He enlisted in the Army and served with the Royal Horse and Royal Field Artillery in France and England during World War I. Once, when moving out under fire, one of the horses was killed and they had to cut it loose on the run. As a signaller, one of his jobs was to reconnoiter no man’s land under the cover of darkness to find and patch broken lines. When removed from one mission, his replacement was killed. He was gassed and suffered permanent scarring. William never forgot how to communicate using Morse code. He was transferred to Army Reserve in March 1919.William emigrated from Scotland in 1920 to Kenton, Manitoba and in 1927 purchased his farm two and a half miles south of Kenton. He farmed, lived, and raised a family there until his death in 1982. His children are Murray, Carol, Albert and Harvey, who still farms there. SAVAGE, Dougald A. WWII Dougald was born in Carstairs, Manitoba in 1918. He enlisted in the Air Force and served as an Airframe Mechanic with 431 Squadron in England and Darlington, Scotland during World War II. He was a member of Elm Creek Royal Canadian Legion Branch 65 and Carman Legion Branch 18 from 1945 to 2004. Dougald passed away in 2004. SELBY, Robert T. WWII Robert was born in St. Lazare, Manitoba on September 2, 1921. He served with the CAPC delivering mail to ships at sea and sorting army mail. He served in England, France, Holland and Belgium during World War II. Robert passed away on February 28, 1991.
