He moved to Canada at six years old after his father’s death. He enlisted in the Army at age nineteen and took basic training in Ontario with the Tank Corp. While taking tank training, he developed pneumonia and was honourably discharged. He worked at the Inglis plant in Toronto and became a supervisor and tested the guns before they were issued. He met and married Luverne Hicks, another assembly line worker. He moved to Winnipeg and died in 2016. They had three children, Ron Spence, Donna Foss and Bonnie Sangster who married Harvey and they farm just south of Kenton, Manitoba. SPENCE (HICKS), Edith Luverne WWII & PEACETIME Edith worked at the Inglis plant on the gun assembly line during World War II. She met and married Donald Spence, who also worked on the assembly line as a supervisor and tested guns before they were issued. Edith joined the Army Reserves in 1961 and trained as a Dental Technician. She trained in Winnipeg, Shilo and Wainwright. Edith passed away in 2017. STEWART, James D. PEACETIME James was born in Russell, Manitoba in 1953. He joined the RCEME in 1979 and served until 1999. He was in Cyprus as a peacekeeper from September 1988 to February 1989. He was posted to Cornwallis, Borden, Moose Jaw, Calgary and Winnipeg. James is a three-year member of Winnipeg Beach Royal Canadian Legion Branch 61.
