105 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca HOUGH, Reginald WWI Reginald was born in London, England in 1889 and farmed in the Bagot, Manitoba area. He joined the Army in March 1916 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, sailing from Halifax in September 1916 on the SS Olympic. He served in England and was sent to Boulogne, France in February 1917. Reginald initially was a Private with the 107th Pioneer Canadian Battalion and then became a Sapper with the 2nd Battalion. He was a Batman to a Lieutenant for a short period of time. Reginald was awarded the Good Conduct Badge. He sailed home after the war on the RMS Mauretania in June 1919 and was discharged on July 8, 1919. He retired in the United Kingdom in 1960, passing away in Dorset, England in 1970 at the age of 81. HUK, Jerry “Zado” WWII Jerry was born on June 14, 1924 in Zbaraz, Manitoba, son of Petro and Josephine Huk. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1942 and served as an A/B (Able Bodied) Seaman on the HMCS Cobalt, a Corvette, attached to the North Atlantic Escort Duty. Their duties were to protect the Allied Merchant ships against enemy attacks as they crossed the Atlantic Ocean to the European theatre of war. He was discharged in 1946. After his discharge he worked for the Railway Police Staff in the Grand Beach Area and the Department of National Defense as Supervisor of Base Supply Stationery Department. He then retired and lived in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He enjoyed being a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Ukrainian Branch 141. HUTCHINSON, Thomas M. WWI Thomas was born in Egton, Yorkshire, England in 1887 and farmed in the Bagot, Manitoba area. He joined the Army in 1915 in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba with the 226th Overseas Battalion. He had scarlet fever at Camp Hughes Manitoba in October 1916. Thomas sailed from Halifax in December 1916 for Liverpool, England on the SS Olympic. He was a Private with the 44th Battalion serving in England, France and Belgium and was sent to France in April 1917. Thomas suffered a gunshot wound to his arm in September 1917. He married Frances Pauline McAvan in Epson, Surrey, England in August 1918. Thomas was injured in action near Lene, France and was hospitalized before being sent home. He was awarded the Military Medal, sailing home from England after the war in September 1918, being discharged on November 14, 1918. Thomas passed away in Winnipeg on January 12, 1975 at the Deer Lodge Hospital. He is buried at Alta Mount Cemetery in Pilot Mound, Manitoba.
