83 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca HALVORSON, Gustav C. “Gus” WWII Gus joined the Royal Canadian Air Force at the beginning of World War II and served at remote Radar bases in the Queen Charlotte Islands and in the Northwest Territories. He spent many years of service on Canadian bases in Quebec, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Gus also served four years on a NATO Air Base in Germany. He retired from the services in 1961 as Corporal. Gus spent eighteen years in the RCAF and passed away on April 9, 1988. HAMELIN, Alcide WWII & KOREA Corporal Alcide Hamelin enlisted in Winnipeg on July 22, 1942 at No. 10 District Depot. His rank was Corporal in the PPCLI (Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry). He served overseas in Sicily, Italy, and Continental Europe. He received the 1939-1945 Star, the Sicily and Italy Star and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. He was discharged from No. 10 District Depot in Winnipeg on February 1, 1946. He later rejoined the service and went to Korea. He returned to Canada and lived in Ontario until his death. HAMELIN, Francois F. “Fred” WWII Private Fred Hamelin, of Fisher Branch, enlisted in July 1941 and took his training at Camp Shilo and Portage la Prairie. He was in Winnipeg when the Winnipeg Grenadiers were leaving for Hong Kong at the end of October 1941. As they were short of men Fred volunteered to go with them and at this time transferred to the Winnipeg Grenadiers. He was taken prisoner in December 1941. Fred Hamelin died in the prison camp in 1943 at the young age of seventeen.
