75 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca HALAYKO, Peter WWII Peter enlisted on September 15, 1944 in the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. He trained at Fort Osborne Barracks, Fort Garry, and Camp Shilo, Manitoba. He went overseas on the ship Aquitania and landed in Scotland. He served in England, France, Holland, Belgium and Germany. He came back to Canada at the beginning of September 1946 on the same ship. He was discharged on September 30, 1946. HALL (HENDERSHOTT), Arley Pearl PEACETIME Arley enlisted in Winnipeg with the Royal Canadian Air Force in October 1951. She attended boot camp in Saint-Jean, Quebec and went to Clinton, Ontario to learn a trade. She graduated from the radar and communications school as a performance checker (ground) in July 1952. She transferred to Summerside, Prince Edward Island until May 1953, then back to the radar and communications school and graduated as a communications mechanic in November 1953. She transferred to Falconbridge, Ontario where she met Albert Kotilla, who was a radar technician. She married him in Sudbury, Ontario in November 1954. Arley was honourably discharged in April 1955 in Falconbridge, Ontario and then resided in Campbell River, British Columbia. HALL, Charles WWI Charles enlisted in Winnipeg on March 16, 1916 in the 184th Battalion. He trained at Camp Hughes, which later became Camp Shilo. As a result of the intensive training which he received he developed severe varicose veins in both legs, which is why his time overseas was spent in the orderly room in London. When Charles was at Camp Hughes, a request was received by the commanding officer for volunteers to help with the harvest on southern Manitoba farms. He volunteered on the condition that the farmer would allow his family to stay at the farm while he worked there. Charles served in England with the Canadian Army Service Corps and was demobilized on February 27, 1919. He was instrumental in the founding of The Royal Canadian Legion in Fisherton in February 1945 and was the first Secretary. Charles passed away on May 17, 1952 and is buried in the Soldiers Plot in the Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa.
