107 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca JOHNSON, Fred PEACETIME Private Fred Johnson was born on March 3, 1930. He joined the PPCLI 1st Battalion and was with this regiment from 1951 to 1954. Fred took basic training in Camp Borden and Camp Ipperwash, Ontario. He left for Korea in the spring of 1952 and returned to Canada in March 1953 and was then stationed at Currie Barracks in Calgary, Alberta. Later Fred took paratroop training at Rivers, Manitoba and Camp Shilo. In the summer of 1953 he was made qualified paratrooper and later made thirteen jumps. He took a winter survival course in White Horse, Yukon with one paratroop jump in February 1954. He was discharged in September 1954. Fred rejoined the service in November 1954 in Winnipeg as Gunner 1st Battalion, RCHA and was stationed in Winnipeg until his discharge in 1957. JONES, John WWI John was born in Hampstead, Ontario in 1890 and was a carpenter from Bagot, Manitoba. He joined the Army in March 1916 in Winnipeg with the 196th Overseas Battalion, sailing from Halifax in November 1916 on the SS Southland. John was a Private with the Canadian Mounted Rifles, serving in England and was sent to France in April 1917. John was severely wounded on August 11, 1918 in Rouen, France by machinegun bullets to his elbow, femur and pelvis. He was awarded the Good Conduct Badge. After the war, John sailed back to Portland, Maine in May 1919 on the HMAT Essequibo (ambulance transport). He was discharged on February 7, 1920. John passed away at the Deer Lodge Hospital in Winnipeg on January 15, 1966. KENNEDY, Clinton G. SPECIAL DUTY AREA & PEACETIME Clinton was born in Neepawa, Manitoba in 1940. He joined the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals/Communications & Electronics Branch in 1959 and served with different units in Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. He also served in Congo from 1962 to 1963, Germany from 1965 to 1969 and 1975 to 1979 and Cyprus in 1974. Clinton retired in 1980. He is presently a 31-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Winnipeg Beach Branch 61.
