47 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca CAMPBELL, Robert G. WWII Robert was born in Brandon, Manitoba in 1923. He enlisted in the Army with the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery First Division, First Field Regiment. He served in Canada, England, Italy, France and Holland during World War II. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the 1939-1945 Star, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star and theWar Medal 1939-1945. Robert married and had two children. He worked until retirement with the Manitoba Vehicle Branch. Robert passed away in 2008; he was a nineteen-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion St. James Branch 4. CARROLL, George Alvin WWII George was born in 1921 and was raised on the family farm in Bagot, Manitoba. He joined the Navy in 1938 eventually becoming a Radio Direction Finder and radar expert. While serving on the HMCS Iroquois in 1944, George received the Distinguished Service Medal for his skill in successful attacks on enemy ships off the French coast. He continued in the Navy after the war, becoming Commissioned Officer. In 1958 George was in charge of planning a training facility for Radar Plotters at HMCS Stadacona in Halifax. The facility opened in 1962 and a plaque is placed there in his honour. George passed away in 1963. In 1985 the main building of the Maritime Command Training Centre in Halifax was renamed the Carroll Building. He was promoted to full Commander posthumously. CARROLL, Russell Thomas WWII Russell was born in 1919 in Stockton, Manitoba and lived on a farm in Bagot, Manitoba. He joined the Army in Winnipeg becoming a Sergeant with the 1st Canadian Motor Ambulance Convoy, 1st Division. Russell served in the United Kingdom, Sicily, Italy, France, Holland and Germany. After the war, he served with the Military Government in Germany with the Canadian Occupation Force. He was discharged in 1946 and rejoined the military in 1953 serving until 1969. Russell passed away in June 2002.
