191 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca TOMKO, William James “Bill” WWII William was born in Winnipeg Beach, Manitoba in 1917, the son of Peter Tomko and Martha Zaborowski. Bill owned a service station in Winnipeg Beach and was married to Olga Tyshkowski. Their first son, James, was born in 1941. Bill enlisted in the Canadian Army on March 19, 1943 in Winnipeg, Manitoba and trained in Fort Garry, Manitoba and Camp Borden, Ontario. He served overseas in World War II as a mechanic and driver with the Canadian Armoured Corps (Fort Garry Horse) in Continental Europe and the United Kingdom. Bill was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the 1939-1945 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, and a Good Conduct Badge. He was discharged from the Army in March 1946 and resumed his family life and service station business in Winnipeg Beach. He was a member of the Winnipeg Beach Royal Canadian Legion Branch 61. Bill and Olga were blessed with two sons and three daughters. Bill was unfortunately killed in a tragic automobile accident in Lockport, Manitoba on March 13, 1956, and was laid to rest in the Winnipeg Beach Cemetery. TOWERZEY, Ernest Forrest WWI Ernest was born on August 9, 1884 in Bristol, England. He farmed in the Bagot, Manitoba area. Ernest enlisted in the Army in Winnipeg on January 6, 1916, serving with the 17th Battalion. He picked up the German measles on August 24, 1916. Ernest was sent to France on November 14, 1916. He was hospitalized with trench fever in France three separate times, May, July and August 1917. Ernest was awarded the Good Conduct Badge on January 6, 1918. After the war, he sailed from Liverpool, England on March 12, 1919 on the RMS Baltic. Ernest was discharged on March 24, 1919. TOWNS, William E. “Bill” SPECIAL DUTY AREA Bill was born in 1927 on the farm in Ninga, Manitoba. He joined the RCAF in 1950 and graduated as Flying Officer at Centralia, Ontario base in 1951. He was honourably discharged in 1955. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25. On April 30, 2018 Bill passed away at Bayside Personal Care Hospital in Killarney, Manitoba.
