51 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca CONAN, Joseph WWI Joseph was born in Colpo, France on May 2, 1884. He served in the Army with the 116th Battalion, French Regiment in France. He was killed in action on June 30, 1915. CONAN, Louis WWI Louis was born on March 17, 1895 in Colpo Morbichan, France. He came to Canada in 1912, at the age of 17, when he joined his brother Joseph who was already in Fisher Branch. Early in 1915 he was called up for military training with the French army and later joined the 35th Heavy Artillery Regiment in Vannes, France. On September 20, 1915 he fell sick with dysentery and was hospitalized until December 18, 1915. In 1916, he was sent to Italy with the 111th Heavy Artillery Regiment. He was in Germany and Austria from December 28, 1917 to April 30, 1918. Louis was discharged in Lorient, France and on August 28, 1919 he received a Good Conduct Certificate. He came back to farm in Fisher Branch shortly after his return to Canada. For many years Louis was a Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 158, Hodgson. Louis Conan passed away on June 5, 1982, at the age of 87 years. COUBROUGH, Malcolm WWI Malcolm was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1889 and farmed in the Bagot, Manitoba area. He joined the Army in November 1916 in Winnipeg and trained at Camp Hughes and Winnipeg. Malcolm qualified as a Wire Entanglement Farmer, sailing to England in May 1917 on the SS Olympic. He was sent to France in August 1917, serving as a Private with the 1st Battalion, Canadian Machine Gun Corps. He served in the 174th Battalion, the 16th Battalion and the 1st CMGC in France during World War I. After the war he sailed home in May 1919 from Liverpool, England. Malcolm passed away in 1990 and is buried at Hillside Cemetery.
