69 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca FOSTER, Harry WWI Harry was born 1892 in Aldbury, England and farmed in Bagot, Manitoba. He joined the Army in March 1916 in Winnipeg. Harry was a Private with the 78th Battalion sailing from Halifax in May 1916 on the SS Empress of Britain. He served in England, France and Belgium being sent to France in August 1916. Harry suffered a gunshot wound to his hand, having his finger amputated as well as a cheek, chest and head injury at Ypres, Belgium. He sailed home on the SS Grampian in October 1917 from Liverpool, England. Harry passed away in 1958 and is buried at Sparling Cemetery, south of Justice, Manitoba. GORESKY, Nicholas “Nick” WWII Nick was born on October 11, 1918 in the Rural Municipality of Rockwood (Stonewall, Manitoba) the son of Basil and Victoria Goresky, who were immigrants from Ukraine. He joined the Fort Garry Horse during World War II in 1940 and then transferred to the Lord Strathcona Horse in July 1942. He went overseas in 1943 to England, North Africa, Italy, Germany, France, Belgium and Holland. He was discharged in January 1946. For his service, he was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. Nick came back to Stonewall where he dairy farmed. He married Sheila Thomsen in 1947 and had five children: Judy, Phillip (deceased), Gordon, Gary and Bonnie. He was a Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion Stonewall Branch 52. Nick passed away in February 1993 and Sheila in 2009. GOURLEY, David WWII David was born on April 20, 1922 and worked on the family farm in the Bagot, Manitoba area. He joined the Army on November 11, 1942 in Winnipeg, training in Winnipeg at Fort Osborne and Fort Garry. David was transferred to Chilliwack, BC to train with the Royal Canadian Engineers in January 1943. He was sent overseas in July 1943 and attached to Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion. David served in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany being discharged on February 16, 1946.
