139 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca McKENZIE, Lorne Kenneth “Kenny” WWII Kenneth was born to Hugh McKenzie and Florence Baxendale in Brandon, Manitoba on June 16, 1919. He originally enlisted on September 25, 1940 with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders in Portage la Prairie and then with the Lord Strathcona’s Horse in March 1941. He received his training at Listowel and Camp Borden before proceeding overseas in November 1941. After further training in Africa in 1942, the Canadian Corps landed in Italy where they smashed the Hitler Line. Kenneth was killed in action on May 30, 1944 in the Liri Valley, following the Battle of Torrice Crossroads. He was initially buried at Torrice Crossroads Cemetery but was reburied in 1948 at the Cassino Military Cemetery, Cassino, Italy in Plot 5, Row K, Grave 17. McKenzie Hill in the Lynn Lake area is named in his honour. His medals include the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, Defence Medal, and War Medal. Kenneth’s mother Mrs. Florence McKenzie received the Memorial Cross. McKENZIE, Norman Leland R. R. KOREA Norman, the son of Angus and Helen (Sayese) McKenzie, was born in Flin Flon, Manitoba on November 7, 1930. He enlisted on September 20, 1950 and served in Korea with the Lord Strathcona Tank Corp from 1950 to 1952. He was discharged on October 1, 1952. He married Lena Rempel on October 12, 1957 and they had two children Sandra and David. Norman was a 35-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Flin Flon Branch 73 from July 1, 1957 until he passed away in November 1992. McKENZIE, Ronald James PEACETIME Ronald was born in Flin Flon, Manitoba on December 14, 1936, the son of Angus and Helen (Sayese) McKenzie. He enlisted on November 7, 1954 and served in Germany with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry during peacetime from 1955 to 1957. He was discharged on November 17, 1957. Ronald married Alta Qualie on August 2, 1958 and they had four children, Robert, Leonard, Rena and Lori. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 73 in Flin Flon from July 1974 until he passed away in August 1992.
