95 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca HIGHFIELD, Ron R. C. WWII Ron was born in Gilbert Plains in 1925. He enlisted in the Army and served during World War II. He lived and breathed The Royal Canadian Legion. He was volunteering for any construction. He was very much a part of the conventions when he and his wife went to Ottawa for all district Presidents when his uniform and medals went missing. Two days later, a new uniform and medals turned up in Ottawa with apologies at which time all the Presidents and wives went on a cruise and dined with Prince Philip. After the cruise and dinner, he came home and all he could talk about was how impressed he was with Prince Philip and how knowledgeable he was about The Legion. Ron joined Flin Flon Branch 73 in 1951, was Branch Executive from 1952 to 1958, Branch Second Vice President from 1959 to 1960, Branch First Vice President from 1961 to 1962; Branch President, District Secretary #1 North from 1963 to 1964; Branch Past President District Secretary #1 North from 1965 to 1966; District Secretary District #1 North from 1967 to 1968; District Commander District #1 North from 1969 to 1970; District Commander District #1 North from 1971 to 1972; Vice Chairman, M&NW Ontario, Command from 1971 to 1972; 3rd Vice President from 1973 to 1974; 2nd Vice President from 1975 to 1976; 1st Vice President from 1977 to 1978 and President from 1979 to 1980. He was Chairman of Branch 73 Housing Committee from 1982 to 1983; President of Branch 73 Housing Corporation from 1983 to 1986; Manager and maintenance, Jubilee Residence from 1983 to 1986. Ron transferred membership to Red Deer Branch 35 in 1991. He supervised volunteers on Branch renovations in 1992, served on Branch committees in 1993, chaired the Committee on Revisions of Branch by-laws in 1995 and was involved in Green Thumb, fundraising and car raffles in 1995. Ron was awarded Life Membership in 1983, LMSM in 1988, Certificate of Merit in 1993, Palm Leaf in 1995, Canada’s Centennial Medal in 1967, Queen’s 25th Anniversary Medal in 1977 and Canada’s 125th Confederation Anniversary in 1993. Ron passed away in 2002. HILL, Harold Wilfred WWI Harold was born in Brantford, Ontario in 1886 and was a decorator from the Bagot, Manitoba area. He joined the Army in March 1916 in Brandon, Manitoba with the 181st Battalion. Harold sailed from Halifax in April 1917 for England on the SS Grampian. He served as a Private with 44th Battalion in England and was sent to France in March 1918. Harold had diphtheria and had a hammer toe amputated. He was awarded the Good Conduct Badge. He sailed home to Canada after the war on the Empress of Britain and was discharged on August 16, 1919. Harold passed away in 1963 and is buried at the Farringdon Cemetery in Brantford, Ontario.
