49 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca CHESTER, James Russell WWI James was born in Baldur, Manitoba in 1894 and farmed in the Bagot, Manitoba area. He joined the Army in November 1915 in Winnipeg. Russell sailed from Halifax on the SS Olympic in April 1916, serving in England, France and Belgium as a Corporal with the 44th Battalion. He was sent to France in August 1916 where he suffered a gunshot wound in February 1917 at Vimy Ridge, also picking up influenza and trench fever. James was awarded the Military Medal for Bravery in the Field. He returned home after the war to St. John’s on the SS Melita in December 1918. He was discharged on January 22, 1919. James passed away in 1925. CHRISTENSEN, Arthur E. WWII Arthur was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1916. He enlisted in the Army during World War II with the 13th Winnipeg Field Battery. Arthur served in England and received the Territorial Service Medal. Arthur passed away in 2018 and was a 76-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 30 West Kildonan. CLARKE, Fred WWII Fred was born in England. He enlisted in the Army on November 15, 1940 in Winnipeg serving as a Private with the Royal Canadian Engineers. Fred served in Canada, the United Kingdom and Northwest Europe. He was discharged on December 13, 1945.
