129 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca MACHAN, Leslie David WWI Leslie was born in Bagot, Manitoba in 1895 and worked as a fireman for the Grand Truck Railroad. He joined the Army in 1914 in Brandon, Manitoba sailing to England in May 1915 on the SS Carpathia. Leslie was a Private with 27th Battalion by September 1915. He served in England and Belgium and was sent to France in March 1918. Leslie was wounded in the thigh, wrist and back by an accidental ricochet bullet in Belgium in November 1915. He was awarded the Good Conduct Badge. Leslie sailed to Halifax after the war in December 1918 on the HMHS Olympic. He married Myrtle Louise Dunsmore on November 4, 1920. He passed away on December 14, 1963 and is buried in the Kelowna Memorial Park Cemetery in Kelowna, BC. MACKIE, Charley WWII Private Charley Mackie, son of Jack and Sarah Mackie of Fisherton, enlisted in the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders in October 1940. He joined up at the same time as Cyril Stodgell. Charley trained at Fort Osborne Barracks and went overseas with B Company, Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders in 1941. When stationed at Worthing, England Charley met Walter Imlah. He served in England and France. He took part in the Dieppe Raid on August 19, 1942; the battle in which many were killed and many soldiers were taken Prisoners of War. Charley also took part at the Battle of Normandy on June 6, 1944, D-Day. He continued fighting with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders until he was killed in action in August 1944 in France. MALCOWICH, William “Bill” WWII Bill enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces (active) on February 22, 1945 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He acquired his basic training at Fort Osborne Barracks. He was granted an honourable discharge on January 17, 1946 after the end of World War II having served with the Canadian Infantry Rifle Corps. After his discharge he returned to work on the family farm. He later resumed his work at the mines in Uranium City until his accidental death in 1957. He received the War Medal and the 1939-1945 Star for his service during World War II.
