53 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca COUSINS, James Henry WWII & KOREA James worked on the family farm in the Bagot, Manitoba area when he joined the Army. He did some training in Petawawa, Ontario and was in the artillery with the Canadian 1st Division serving in England, Sicily, Italy, France and Holland. James enlisted with the infantry in the Korean War saying it was “hell on earth”. COUSINS, Sidney John WWII Sidney was born on March 11, 1920 and worked on the family farm in the Bagot, Manitoba area. He joined the Army on January 20, 1940 in Winnipeg becoming part of the Royal Canadian Infantry Corps, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (A Company), serving in England and Sicily. At Leonforte, Sicily while under attack, Sidney picked up a bren gun and proceeded to, single handed, take out two, five-men enemy machinegun positions. His actions caused the enemy line to collapse. Sidney was killed later that evening on July 22, 1943 when a shell landed on his position. He was recommended for a Distinguished Conduct Medal and Military Medal, but these could only be to a living person, Sidney was “Mentioned in Dispatches”. His story was mentioned on the TV program ‘For King and Country’. Sidney is buried at the Agira Canadian War Cemetery in Sicily. Cousins Lake in northern Manitoba is named in his honour. COUSINS, William A. WWII William was working on the family farm in the Bagot area when he joined the Army. He drove a truck in the Armoured Corps while serving in England, France and Belgium. He landed in France on D-Day. William passed away in 1980.
