147 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca MUNRO, James Robert “Bob” BOERWAR &WWI Bob Munro served during the Boer War and World War I. He was in the Army for 21 years. He spent his time as a cook. He was married while he was in South Africa. His wife died on the way back to Canada after the war. Following the War he cooked for a number of years at Tom Menard’s Hotel in Fisher Branch. He then lived with Mr. Frederick Kilby until 1944 when Mr. Kilby passed away. Bob then moved to Winnipeg where he lived, with Phil and Violet Gard until his death in 1968 at the age of 92. MURRAY, Charles Gordon WWII Charles was born in Carman, Manitoba in 1925. He enlisted in the Air Force during World War II. He served in Canada as a Supply Clerk to make sure the soldiers had the proper equipment. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Carman Branch 18 for over thirty years. Charles passed away in 2008. NAHULIAK, Joe WWII Joe was called to the army on June 19, 1941 and enlisted to active service on May 8, 1942 with the Winnipeg Grenadiers Regiment and the Army Ordnance Corps. He served in Canada during World War II. He took basic training at Fort Osborne Barracks and went from there to Portage la Prairie. He took a mechanic and driving course at Woodstock, Ontario and from there went to Three Rivers, Quebec. He joined active service from Three Rivers and went to Terrace, British Columbia. The Grenadiers went overseas but Joe was not fit to go overseas so he joined the Army Ordnance Corps. He moved to Vancouver and then Vernon, British Columbia; then to Alaska on guard duty, then back to Vancouver, Calgary, Shilo and then back to Winnipeg for an honourable discharge on August 31, 1945. After service, he got married in Winnipeg and moved to Hodgson, Manitoba. He farmed for twelve years then moved to New Westminster, British Columbia. Joe worked as a longshoreman for 25 years and lived in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia with his wife, Mamie. He was the first steward at The Royal Canadian Legion Hodgson Branch 158.
