183 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca SIMMONS, Hugh Robertson WWII Hugh was born in High Bluff, Manitoba to Lillie (Coxsmith) and James Simmons on October 27, 1915. He served with the Manitoba Mounted Rifles from 1932 to 1934. He married Margaret Knight on July 5, 1941 and enlisted in Winnipeg on October 4, 1941. He flew with the 1664 Halifax V Conversion Unit Group Overseas, 6 Bomber Command. Flight Sergeant (Pilot) Hugh Robertson Simmons was killed near Church House Farm, Atley Hill, South Cowton, Yorkshire, as a result of an accident when landing at 0135 coming home from a night training mission on October 22, 1943. The funeral service was held at Stonefalls Cemetery with full Service honours with burial at Harrogate Yorkshire, England. A headstone is in place at the High Bluff Cemetery. Simmons Peninsula in northern Manitoba is named in his honour. Hugh’s medals include the Defence Medal, War Medal and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. SIMS, Fredrick Charles WWI Fredrick was born in Andover, Hampshire, England on September 5, 1885. He farmed in the Bagot, Manitoba area. Fredrick enlisted on January 3, 1916 in Winnipeg, Manitoba with 78th Battalion. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia on the SS Empress of Britain on May 20, 1916 landing in Liverpool on May 30. Fredrick was sent to France on August 12, 1916, becoming a Sergeant with the 78th Battalion. He suffered from a gunshot wound to the face on June 13, 1917. Fredrick left Liverpool, England on July 28, 1919, arriving in Halifax on August 5 on the RMS Adriatic. Fredrick was discharged on June 5, 1920 as a Sergeant Major. He was awarded the Bravery in the Field Medal as well as the Distinguished Conduct Medal. Fredrick passed away in 1942. SKENE, George D. WWI George was born in Uxbridge, Ontario in 1886. He enlisted in the Army and served in France and Belgium during World War I. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, War Medal 1939-1945 and General Service Badge. George passed away in 1952.
