141 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca McKENZIE, Samuel WWI Samuel was born in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1879 and was a teamster from Bagot, Manitoba. He joined the Army in April 1916 in Winnipeg, sailing from Halifax on the SS Missanabie in October 1916. This ship was later torpedoed on September 9, 1918. Samuel was originally with the 2nd Battalion Rifle Brigade as a Private, then with the 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles serving in England and was sent to France in December 1916. He was reported missing in April 1917, however he returned to his unit. Samuel was killed in action on October 26, 1917 at Rouen, France. His name is listed at the Menin Gate (Ypres) Memorial in Belgium. McNAUGHTON, Donald WWII Corporal Donald McNaughton enlisted in Winnipeg in the Army on September 6, 1939. He joined the Active Canadian Army with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals. Don served in Canada, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. He received the 1939-1945 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and the Defence Medal. Donald was discharged from the Service on ‘demobilization’ on December 11, 1945. After the war Donald moved to Fisher Branch where he remained until his death. McNAUGHTON, Gary C. PEACETIME Gary joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on January 7, 1954 and served in Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, in addition to four years overseas at Grostenquin, France. His service career was dedicated to Aircraft Maintenance and he worked on many different aircrafts such as Harvards, F86 Sabre Fighters, DC3, Bristol Freighters, C130’s, Sea King Helicopters and Aurora A/C. After serving for thirty years, five months, Gary retired from the Canadian Air Force, Air Command Headquarters in Winnipeg, Manitoba on May 12, 1988. He was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration and Clasp and Queen’s Jubilee Medals. After service, Gary worked as the Owner/Operator of Camp Hide-away Resort at Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba.
