131 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca MALOFIE, Daniel WWII Daniel was born in Winnipeg on August 17, 1910. He received his education in Winnipeg became a School teacher and taught locally until he enlisted in the Army in January 1941. Daniel took training at Brandon, Carberry, Regina, Portage la Prairie, Paulson and Rivers. While in training at Portage la Prairie Flying School he won the Proficiency Award. He graduated as a sergeant from Paulson School. Daniel was the first Fisher Branch resident to graduate in the RCAF. In November 1941 he was sent overseas to serve with the RCAF in England. He was reported missing over Holland on July 2, 1942 while on a bombing mission. He was later officially presumed dead. He served as a Pilot Officer during World War II. In a quote from the Winnipeg Free Press at this time: “Pilot Officer Malofie was listed as missing after air operations in the 313th casualty list released by the RCAF from Ottawa”. Ten airmen including Dan Malofie are interred at Eenrum (Westernieland) General Cemetery, Province of Groningen, Holland. The graves are in a prominent position in a “Pelouse d’honneur” created by the local people in the centre of the cemetery. MAMALICK, Nick WWII Nick joined the Army in Manitoba in 1943. He was sent to Dartmouth, Nova Scotia for some time. He was discharged for medical reasons. Nick lived in Hodgson and Fisher Branch. He is deceased. MANNINGWAY, Thomas Edwin “Tom” WWII Tom joined the Canadian Army (Active) on April 9, 1942. He served in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe during World War II with the Winnipeg Light Infantry. He received his discharge on January 15, 1946 at No.10 District Depot. He received the 1939-1945 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp.
