He trained in Winnipeg then went to Jamaica. He returned to Canada in 1941 then went to Hong Kong in October 1941. He was taken prisoner in Hong Kong and was a prisoner until the war ended. He returned to Canada and is now deceased. One of Dick’s war comrades related that prior to going to Hong Kong - Dick made rings and identification bracelets for his buddies. Of course he sold these. He also remembers Dick as a “huge chap” not afraid of anybody or anything. PACKULAK, Joseph WWII Joseph was born on August 7, 1925. He enlisted in the Army at Winnipeg on September 30, 1941 and served in the Aleutian Islands alongside the US forces in 1943. He also served in the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany as a Gunner. Joseph was awarded the France and Germany Star and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He was discharged on February 4, 1946 at the No. 10 District Depot in Winnipeg. Joseph resided in Hammonton, New Jersey, USA. PAISLEY, Herbert Donton WWI Herbert was born in Sidney, Manitoba in 1891 and farmed in the Bagot, Manitoba area. He joined the Army with the 18th Mounted Rifles, enlisting in November 1915 in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. Herbert sailed from Canada for England on the SS Olympic in April 1916. Later he became a Lance Corporal with the 8th Battalion (Manitoba Regiment) serving in England and France. Herbert was sent to France in October 1916. He suffered a serious gunshot wound to the leg and a wound to the arm in September 1918 at Rouen, France. Herbert became seriously ill having his leg removed six inches below the knee. His leg then had to be amputated above the knee, he suffered greatly. He was awarded the Good Conduct Badge. Herbert died of his wounds from complications from his leg infection on May 23, 1919 and is buried in Orpington, London, Borough of Bromley. A memorial burial was held at Burnside, Manitoba.
