65 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca FARNCOMBE, Walter Norris WWI Walter was born in 1898 and farmed at Bagot, Manitoba. He served with the reserve militia before war, joining the Army in June 1917 in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba with the 99th Manitoba Rangers. Walter sailed from Halifax for Liverpool in November 1917 in the SS Megantic. He was a Private with the 43rd Battalion serving in England and was sent to France in March 1918. Walter was wounded by machine gun bullet to the arm and chest and later had a head injury at Amiens, France. After the war he sailed home on the HMHS Araguaya and was discharged on October 7, 1919. Walter passed away in 1945 and he is buried at Hillside Cemetery in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. FENTON, Fred I. N. WWI &WWII Fred was born on January 15, 1900 in Toronto, Ontario. He served in World War I with the 101st Battalion and the 25th Battalion in Canada, England and France. He received the BritishWar and Victory Medal. Fred also served during World War II in England with the 3rd Art. H.U. He was killed in a motor vehicle accident in England in October 1941. FERRIS, Clement Allen “Clem” WWII Clem was born on the family farm in MacDonald, Manitoba on October 18, 1910. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on September 10, 1942 during World War II. He was a Leading Aircraftman and was stationed in Calgary and Vancouver. He was discharged on January 24, 1946. He worked as an electrician and was an excellent and renowned violinist. Clem passed away on November 18, 2003 in Calgary at the age of 93.
