99 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca HOBDEN, David Frederick WWII David, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hobden Sr., of Hodgson District, joined the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders on October 6, 1940. He went overseas with the Cameron Regiment in October 1941. He joined up at the same time as Cyril Stodgell and they went overseas at the same time. David was wounded in the Dieppe Raid. After the war, he resided in Alberta. HOBDEN, Harry WWII Harry enlisted in the Lake Superior Regiment in 1942. His training took about a year; the basic training was taken in Winnipeg and his advance training in Camp Shilo. From Camp Shilo he went to Truro, Nova Scotia for about one month. He went overseas on the ship Pasteur. It took them about one week to cross the Atlantic as they had to zig-zag to keep away from German submarines. They landed in Liverpool, England and then they were posted at Aldershot, England. Harry saw action in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany, and slightly wounded his leg. For one year he was in the Occupation Forces. He returned to Canada in the fall of 1946 and received his discharge in December 1946. He then resided in Harwill, Manitoba. HODGSON, Allan David WWI Henry Rosser Hodgson and Margaret McDonald homesteaded in 1909 and received ownership of the land in April 1916. This couple had a total of twelve children - two died in infancy. Four of the sons served ‘on active service’ during World War I. The town, of Hodgson, Manitoba, bears this family’s name. Allan was the sixth son of the Hodgson family. He also had a homestead east of town as of July 1912. He served with the 78th Battalion as Private during World War I. Allan was killed in action while in France on October 1, 1918. His family received a memorial copper plaque honouring him.
