135 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca MAYER, Arthur WWII Arthur was raised in Fisher Branch, the son of the late Louis and Angelena Mayer. He joined the service as a private in Winnipeg in January 1942 with the Royal Canadian Artillery. He was given an honourable discharge that same year due to loss of eyesight in one eye. He retired and lived in Winnipeg. Arthur was an active member of A.N.A.F., Assiniboia Unit 283. Arthur had three brothers who were also in the service, Henry, Leo and Nelson. McBAIN, Daniel WWI Daniel was born in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba in 1894 and was a gasoline engineer from the Bagot, Manitoba area. He joined the Army in April 1916 in Winnipeg, sailing from Halifax to Liverpool, England on the SS Olympic in 1916. Daniel was a Sergeant with the 1st Canadian Engineer Battalion. He had influenza in England in October 1916 and encountered gas from a shell near Boulogne, France in August 1918. He was discharged on July 16, 1919. Daniel married Annie Gilmour Reid on July 15, 1920 in Winnipeg. McDONALD, Hartley Baird WWII Hartley was born on the family farm in Flee Island, Manitoba on September 21, 1903. He worked as a Grain Elevator Agent before the war. Some of the towns he worked in were MacDonald, High Bluff and Inglis, Manitoba as well as in Saskatchewan. Hartley was living in Inglis when he enlisted in the RCAF in 1942. He and the family then moved to High Bluff. Hartley was an Aircraft Mechanic and was stationed inYorkton, Saskatchewan when he was badly injured. While he was attempting to turn a propeller on an aircraft, the pilot inadvertently left the ignition on. This resulted in his hand being so badly damaged that it ended his career as a mechanic. He spent a long time in Deer Lodge Hospital in Winnipeg. Hartley served at Southport, Manitoba for a time before being discharged in 1944 because of his injury. After the war, he returned to being a Grain Elevator Agent as well as farming after purchasing land. Hartley passed away in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba on November 16, 1995.
