This book is in memory of those who served and made the ultimate sacrifice, those who have served and those who continue to serve in the Armed Forces of this great Country. The many donations that are received allow New Brunswick Command, The Royal Canadian Legion to carry on our service to our Veterans, our seniors and our youth of this province. Once again, we wish to thank Fenety Marketing for producing the book so that future generations will never forget the sacrifices made by our young men and women in uniform. Thanks to Mark, Kathy, and all their staff for the great work. We thank the Legion branches, their members and especially the public for providing the photos that have been submitted for this book. Also, this year, thank you to the students who participated in the Legion Poster and Literary Contest. Military Service Recognition Book / Livre reconnaissant le Service militaire, Volume 16 2 Over 75 years of experience serving the people of NB & NS! 111-1133 Regent St. Fredericton, NB (506) 452-2913 150 Edmonton Ave. Moncton, NB (506) 857-4252 255 Connell St. Woodstock, NB (506) 325-2723 211 South Albion St. Amherst, NS (902) 667-5433 Every November we are reminded of the difficulties, hardships and trauma that Veterans have had to deal with for over a century, and continue to deal with long after their service has ended. From a hearing perspective, military service members are exposed to noise that can exceed 160 decibels. This can cause permanent damage to the auditory system. One blast can leave soldiers with hearing loss and possibly tinnitus. In spite of awareness about these potential exposures and using hearing protection in the field, many military personnel still experience auditory damage. That’s where we can help. We pride ourselves on helping you hear your best so that you can live the full, rewarding lives that you have earned. We want everyone to enjoy conversations with friends and family. We don’t want anyone to feel left out of life’s moments. Now, Veterans have access to high-end hearing aid technology and assistive listening devices. Our best hearing aids are the Starkey Livio line of hearing aids. If you are a socially active person who loves meeting people for coffee and conversation these hearing aids can help you hear your best in noisy situations. If you are a quieter person and like to stay home and watch television, these hearing aids can help make voices clearer and allow you to turn down the television volume. If you suffer from tinnitus (ringing in the ears), we have solutions that will help, including hearing aids with tinnitus programs and masking devices to help you sleep at night. www.hearingservices.ca

www.nb.legion.ca 5 It is a great honour to be sharing this dinner in a room full of extraordinary men. In the past few years at UNB I've had the great pleasure of researching and teaching about Canada's war in Italy. I learned this regiment, and indeed all Canadian units in the campaign, made a critical contribution to stopping Nazi evil that only now can we fully appreciate. Recently-declassified intelligence documents about German military strength prove that the Allied invasion of Normandy and drive into Germany would be destroyed unless some way coud be found to draw some of the enemy's attention in the West. Against the 29 Allied divisions that could land in Normandy with the available sealift, the Germans could muster 51. The solution was Sicily and Italy, and you. We also know now that this scheme could only work if your mission to Italy was given the barest minimum of men, weapons and ammunition so as not to reduce the size of the Normandy invasion. Most importantly of all, we know now that you succeeded in this mission beyond the expectations of great generals and planners. Not because you captured all of Italy and crossed the Alps into Vienna, but because with a comparatively small force you convinced Hitler and his generals that you could. That made you very dangerous. For that you lured in 27 of those 51 enemy divisions that - as I need not tell you - included many of the best in the German Army. As often as not this meant you were evenly matched on rugged ground that made Jerry's job a hell of a lot easier than yours. But you kept attacking with the kind of detemination, guts and military skill that made the Germans believe you were always one step away from Vienna. This was exactly what the Combined Chiefs of Staff needed you to do. You fought half the German Army in the West, with less than a quarter of Allied strength. To me that doesn't make you D-Day Dodgers; it makes you the long right flank of the invasion of Normandy and advance to Germany. The world has you to thank for making Allied strategy to stop Nazism finally work. And you, the Carleton and Yorks, performed more than your share of the mission 62 years ago in the Dittaino River Valley in Sicily, and at Reggio and the dusty foot of the boot, and in front of that awful Gully and the rest of that terrible winter around Ortona. You did it brilliantly 61 years ago when you bashed your way through the Hitler Line, and you were nothing short of miraculous in that hellish, shell-swept valley in front of San Fortunato Ridge. And you kept on doing it, even though it meant another wet Italian winter, often below sea-level in the Po Valley flats. THE TOAST TO THE REGIMENT, THE CARLETON & YORK REGIMENT As proposed by Lee Windsor of the University of New Brunswick Conflict Studies Faculty at the Dinner held in conjunction with the 60th, and Final, Annual Reunion of Surviving Veterans of the Regiment held at Fredericton, New Brunswick, on Saturday, August 6, 2005. cont’d

www.nb.legion.ca 7 And if that wasn't enough to ask of you, you went on to save the lives of countless thousands of grateful Dutch souls. Some of you were there for part, some the whole, of the show. Regardless, again I say, this room is full of truly extraordinary men. As often as not at times when people gather to remember the nation's contributions to stopping Nazi militarism and other acts of aggression, the focus is on the sacrifice of our war dead. While this is obviously an important part of the act of remembrance, at this moment I would like to honour you who came home. You who perfomed amazing feats of physical endurance in Italy and then the Netherlands, either under blazing hot sun and caked with dust or in the worst kind of wet, mucky winter conditions that make people today stay indoors by a warm fire. You performed these feats while short of most things needed to survive comfortably, not to mention in the midst of the horror of the most bitter combat faced by the Canadian Army in the Second World War. Yet not only did you have the courage to come through that ordeal, you had the courage to come home, shake the dust, mud, and blood off and build the Canada I have had the privilege of growing up in. Regardless of what you worked at when you returned home, in your own ways you all helped to build the only Canada I have ever known. One where justice, freedom, equality for all, and the protection of every human being's fundamental rights is sacred. And you made the nation prosperous so we today can live free from want. Certainly there is more to do, but you the survivors showed us the way. On behalf of all Canadians who enjoy the wonderful nation that you built for us, I thank you, and would now take this opportunity to offer a toast to this fine and proud Regiment. The Mental War The war that never ends You and your sanity are never friends After friends and enemy make amends The mental war that never ends The emotions sway side to side Emotions that are hard to hide I feel up and down like the tide The mental war that never ends Never able to run away All alone I am a stray A fallen friend not with me today The mental war that never ends My mind is now my enemy The scars I can never flee The cost of freedom was never free The mental war that never ends We honor those fallen with a flower The taste of loss still so sour For all who fought until that faithful hour The mental war that never ends www.nb.legion.ca 11 Intermediate Poem Camden Silliker, Grade 9 student at North & South Esk Regional High

Thoughts of Remorse I have done something I believed to be beyond me. I killed another. As I watched his lifeless body slump to the ground, the significance of my actions overwhelmed me. I stopped everything as if my lack of movement could reverse time to what it once was. Escaping from the shock, I hesitate a moment before wandering to the body still with death. I hope as hard as I might that disclosing his identity might dismiss my remorse. But as I peered into his eyes- the eyes of a brother, the guilt came upon me tenfold. I stumbled back staring at my hands and registered the fact that they had followed through with an action so vile. Falling to the ground I sit on my knees letting sobs rack my body. Do I really know who I am anymore? Squeezing my eyes shut this stranger's end plays in my head. A soft buzz begins to fill my ears and my limbs slowly get heavy. The trauma has crept in, leaving an imprint that will never fade. Day after day, night after night; I relive these moments. It tortures me because I know I'm the one that brought upon this man's death. I stole away a life that deserved to be lived. I did that. And it haunts me every day. Coming home I felt as if I was in an unknown land. Simple acts of kindness were foreign to me. They tell me to forget what happened. That what I've suffered doesn't matter now that we've won. I'm trying so hard - so unbelievably hard - to crawl my way out of a place I've been cemented in for years; but I just can't. I see the difference in my mother's eyes when she looks at me: no longer a spark but a dull light. She's happy I'm alive but doesn't like at all how I've changed. Her eyes have become never-ending pools of grief. Seeing everything for what it once was and not for what it can be. The war has made its mark on her. It has deprived her of happiness and is slowly etching a seemingly permanent frown on her once beautiful face. Years have passed as I now sit here withered with age. I observe the bowed heads and faces tilted towards the sky. We are all one body united with the simple act of remembrance. They seated me close to the front among others who survived this war alongside me. They praise my actions, looking at me through a lens that makes my appalling deeds and the simple act of surviving to appear almost heroic. They remember ones lost and ones whose wounds still haven't healed. But as for me, I'll never forget the eyes of that man because those thoughts of remorse have followed my every step. www.nb.legion.ca 15 Senior Essay Amelia-Mae Walker, Grade 10 student at North & South Esk Regional High

Off to War How scary it would be To walk away from family Dodging bullets as they come Battling across the sea How sad it would be To never see a tree Destruction everywhere Surely war is not for me How maddening it would be Fighting what shouldn't exist A senseless loss of life A strong and free fist How appreciated it should be So many soldiers died Fighting for you and me They had no place to hide How thankful that I am For everything they gave So I can feel safe So the world could finally behave www.nb.legion.ca 17 Junior Poem Noah Blakely, Grade 4 student at Napan Elementary School

A Ridge to Remember This past May I went to one of Canada's most treasured memorials. I walked along bombshell infested grounds picturing all the horror, pain and suffering that took place here some hundred years ago. As I looked around at all the oak trees representing a soldier's final breath, I wondered how many Canadians it took to secure this ridge, Vimy ridge. The memorial stood alone, strong and overshadowed the open field landscape around it. It symbolized a battle that for many helped create our world renowned reputation as a country of peace but one that is more than capable of protecting itself when needed. I imagined all the stories behind each bomb that was fired. Was there a Canadian soldier who's final moment was right where I stood? Did he wish he was at home with his family or was he proud to put his life on the line for a cause he may not fully understand? As I got closer to this truly colossal monument the emotion attached to this historic battleground overcame me as I stepped on the polished white steps of the monument. The power of this monument with the thousands of Canadian names engraved forever helped make their remembrance a permanent one. The statues surrounding the monument with their expression of sadness and loss was very powerful. The unspoken word of these statues made me feel that we should never think of this battle as a win without realizing that it had come at a cost far too great. I felt the weeping woman that stood with her head held low, looking down in sorrow at all the names listed on the outer walls represented the sorrow of many. Each engraved name most certainly had a story. Every engraving represented a soldier from a town, a family, and a future that ended during this historic battle. These soldiers all had one thing in common, the future. A future that was taken from them. Their sense of duty and national pride helped create a future that was far brighter for generations than the future that was cut far too short for them. We must make sure that the lives lost weren't in vain. That love will always prevail over hate. That acceptance will prevail over ignorance. That our country must lead the way for a new understanding of world peace. The pain and loss left behind the death of so many Canadians at Vimy must never be forgotten. I've never felt so proud to be Canadian as I did upon the day I visited this moving memorial site. Vimy Ridge on this day sent me a message. It told me not to celebrate the battle won but to mourn the losses of a nation who paid the ultimate sacrifice for us all. When the war looked hopeless, Canada stepped up and answered the call. We must never forget Vimy because the day we forget is the day that history will repeat itself. www.nb.legion.ca 19 Intermediate Essay Alexandre Comeau, Grade 8 student at Dr. Losier Middle School

www.nb.legion.ca 21 Nov. 28th 1944 Dear Ma and Pa, I’ve been holding up well. How’s Sally and John been these days? Is John still playing hockey? Tell them I love them and to be thankful that they live where they are. I can’t imagine living in all these war torn cities. Just yesterday I’ve seen a motherand her two kids hiding in an outhouse starving to death. I gave her an MRE and that’ll probably feed her for a week. It’s so blistering cold I’d say that we are going to freeze to death before we ever get shot. We’ve been getting closer and closer to Germany every day. At the moment we’re in the Ardennes forest preparing for a push through Belgium. Tommy got a pretty nasty gash in his stomach but the medics have him under control. Pearson wasn’t so lucky. Amine went off and took his leg clean off. The doc gave him morphine and did what they could. The way they glorify the war back home makes me sick. If we don’t talk about what’s happening in Europe it’s bound to happen to us. This war is worse than anything I could imagine. the savagery, the hatred and the anger I’ve seen this far, is terrifying. Why can’t people just try to get along and be nioce? You’d think after all this time they might realize that this accomplishes nothing. If I was to die and go to hell it might be a relief.
