www.nb.legion.ca 173 Across the Deep Blue Seas by Mrs Maria Dupuis O’Hanley - Notre Dame, NB Across the deep blue seas, far at war, afraid soldiers, young and old, were taken away from their families and friends to far away lands that they had never seen before. Brave soldiers marching for days and days in the cold rain, in deep frozen snow, frozen aching bones crossing cities and rivers, for only to see dead bodies scattered in front of them. Little children alone and afraid, crying for their mother and father, left behind to starve and die. Shaking, frightened soldiers always thinking, will we ever see our families and friends again? With broken promises, months turned into years. Trying to find a moment and a safe place to rest so they could read love letters with tears pouring down. Torn hearts, torn pictures in their pockets with only fond memories and prayers that they could all return safe back home. But sad to say that only a few made it back home. In fear for his life, a young solider got down on his knees holding a cross in his hands, praying God to please protect us and take us back home soon. After such long tiring years, their prayers were answered ‘cause one day they heard that the war was over. But in the minds of the soldiers, it would never be over. The dodging bullets, the wounded hearts, would never heal. And even now, after all those years, they can still hear the sounds of flying bombers above their heads. For all the white crosses, row by row, let’s not forget it was all for us they died and suffered for. To all of you, my dear soldiers, young and old men and women, I bow my heard and say a prayer to all of you. It makes me cry when I see the sadness in their eyes. Let’s not abandon our Veterans. Please help them. Like gentleman soldiers they were, let’s stand tall and proud. For the nurses, doctors, priests, cooks, helpers. And to all that served at war. Our Veterans are the heroes of our past and the future.
