Newfoundland and Labrador Command Veterans’ Service Recognition Book Volume 23

Volume 23 www.legionnl.com 1 Newfoundland Labrador Command President’s Message Newfoundland and Labrador Command of The Royal Canadian Legion extends its sincere thanks to all those who have contributed to the most recent addition of the Military Service Recognition Book. With this publication we continue to not only educate the youth of our province but all ages of our province who view this most recent publication of those Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who have served our country both at home and abroad with honour, loyalty and dedication. The military history of our province dates back centuries, and is quite unique and distinguished, and until 1949 our province held the same status as the Dominion of Canada, that being the Dominion of Newfoundland. As a result of this long history and involvement of our military in international assignments we have received honours and awards from many countries and many commendations have been bestowed by the crown for distinguished and gallant service. Now as the tenth province of Canada, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians continue to serve with passion and determination and enjoy the respect of a grateful nation. Gerald W. This is a story of Legion members who willingly stepped forward to raise funds in support of a Children’s charity. Over the past 10 years, the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 45 have hosted the Run-the Rock Team from HMCS St. John's during their run across Newfoundland to raise funds in support of the Make-A-Wish Foundation to grant wishes to children who have or are experiencing serious medical issues. Our Branch has supported this most worthwhile cause as one of its main charities in which the membership takes great pride. This being the 28th year that the teams of outstanding sailors from this Naval Ship have completed their run, we as a Branch are especially pleased with the effort the communities of Bonne Bay South put forth in support of this cause. Volume 23 www.legionnl.com 15 Newfoundland Labrador Command continued... Annotation: On August 13th, the Executive and Members of Branch 45, Bonne Bay were very pleased to host HMCS St. John's Run-the-Rock Team in support of the Make-aWish Foundation. Joining the Team was the Commanding Officer, Cdr John Nichelson and the Coxswain, CPO1 Jody Waterfield who unveiled a ship's anchor they donated to our communities for our fundraising efforts during the past ten years. During that time, the communities of Bonne Bay South have raised over $137, 000.00 including $18,111.00 this year. The anchor is located next to our town's Cenotaph. and donations from the business community. Further, on the day of the team’s visit, they are hosted at the Branch by providing them with food, entertainment including accommodations in private home and local B & Bs. The generosity of the community is immeasurable. The Executive and Branch membership host, co-ordinate and raise funds for the Make-AWish Foundation. The efforts of Wayne Reid, Aaron Raike, Susan Brake, Sharon Chalk, Inez Kelly, Helen Harris, and many others have provided outstanding service to our communities. During the 10 years that the Branch has been involved with the Run-the-Rock Team and the Make-A-Wish Foundation, over $137,000.00 has been raised. This will amount to almost 14 wishes for children and their families. To recognize this community spirit, HMCS St. John’s presented awards to the Legion and our community. Most significantly, this year the ship presented and had installed a ship’s anchor which was unveiled on August 13th, 2023, by the Captain, Commander John Nichelson and Coxswain, CPO1 Jody Waterfield who were accompanied by the Run-the Rock Team. The Branch Executive and many community residents participated in this unveiling. The anchor sits on a pedestal next to our community War Memorial. We as a Veteran’s organization are extremely pleased and humbled by the outstanding support for this most worthwhile cause. We will be forever thankful. Volume 22 www.legionnl.com 17 Newfoundland Labrador Command The Lady Nelson was one of the “Lady Boats” built in Birkenhead, England in 1928 and 1929 for Canadian National Steamships for service in the West Indies. The others were the Lady Hawkins, Lady Drake, Lady Somers and Lady Rodney. All were named after the wives of British Admirals with connection to the West Indies. The Lady Nelson was the first to make her maiden voyage on December 12, 1928, and was consequently the flagship of the fleet. The ships were exquisitely outfitted, with fine woods, a glassed-in garden deck, a lavish forward lounge with a bar that ran the entire width of the deck, and fine dining. The Nelson, Hawkins and Drake provided year round passenger and cargo from Halifax to Bermuda and Caribbean ports, while the Somers and Rodney sailed from Halifax to Boston Bermuda and then on to the Caribbean. With the coming of the Second World War the Lady Boats were pressed into service as merchant ships, their colour changed from the bright white to dull grey. A four inch gun was mounted on each aft-deck as protection against German U-boats. The Lady Somers was the first to go to war and she was sunk in the \bay of Biscay off the coast of France on July 16, 1941. On January 16, 1942, the Lady Hawkins left Halifax unescorted at night, and hugging the American coast as far as Hatteras, North Carolina, set her course for Bermuda. At 0200 on January 19th, two torpedoes slammed into her and she sunk in twenty minutes with the loss of 250 lives. Two months later, on March 22, the Lady Nelson was tied up at Castries, St. Lucia, when she was torpedoed by the German submarine U-161, resulting in the death of fifteen passengers and three crewmembers. Fortunately she sank in only shallow waters and was able to be refloated, towed to dry-dock in Mobile, Alabama, and repaired. At that time she was also refitted as a hospital ship. On May 8, 1942 the Lady Drake was on her way from Bermuda to Halifax when she was torpedoed killing twelve people. She sank slowly and 260 made it to lifeboats and were rescued. In April 1943 the Lady Nelson was launched as Canada’s first hospital ship, carrying 70 Canadian Medical Corp personnel and nurses and was fitted with 515 hospital beds. By February 1946 she had completed 30 voyages and carried home 25,000 wounded soldiers. The Lady Rodney was the only Lady Boat not sunk during the war, and by the end of the war had carried home 66,000 troops as well as 66,000 passengers. At the end of the war the Lady Boats Nelson and Rodney were assigned the task of bringing war brides and children from England to Canada through Pier 21 in Halifax. The “Diaper Specials”, as they were affectionately called, performed the service for a year before they were refitted and returned to their original West Indies routes. Many of the war brides who settled in Newfoundland came here via the Lady Nelson, landing at Pier-21 in Halifax and then taking another ship to St. John’s. In 1952 the Ladies, Nelson and Rodney, were sold to Egypt where they were refitted, renamed, and used to carry passengers in the Mediterranean and Red Seas. The Lady Nelson
