Military Service Recognition Book Volume 10 250 URIE, WilliamW. WWI William was born in Deloraine, Manitoba in 1889. He joined the Army and served in the Canadian Infantry with the Saskatchewan Regiment in Canada, Great Britain and France.William was killed in action in 1916. VAN DAMME, Bazil WWII Bazil was born in St. Alphonse, Manitoba, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Odille Van Damme. He enlisted at Fort Osborne Barracks on March 23, 1943. He served with the Light Infantry while training at Portage, Shilo, and Saint John, NB. On October 8, 1945 he married Simone Mason. They had three children, Georgina (Hutlet), Napoleon and Mark. After service, Bazil farmed northeast of Baldur in the old Thor school district and he was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Baldur Branch 108. VIVIAN, William WWII William was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1923 and joined the Royal Canadian Navy, serving in Canada, New York, England and Russia. He passed away in 1999 and had been a member of the Elmwood Branch 9 of The Royal Canadian Legion. VOGEN, Elias“Eli” WWI Elias was born in Iceland, the son of Petur and Elizabeth Vogen. He enlisted in the 16th Battalion on January 15, 1918. A month later went to England and was there in training when the war ended. He returned to Canada on July 7, 1919. Eli lived in Glenboro where he married Gudny Sigurdson. They had two children, Bill and Norma Jean McLennan. VOGEN, Julius WWI Julius was born on July 12, 1870 in Iceland, the son of Jon and Katrin Jonsson. They lived in the RM of Argyle. He enlisted on April 24, 1918 going overseas a month later. He participated in the battles of Cambrai and Mons and was in the Occupation Force in Germany until his return to Canada on May 10, 1919. He married and made his home in Winnipeg until his death and burial at Selkirk. WAGSTAFF, Raymond Hebert “Ray” WWII Raymond was born in Carpenter, North Dakota on September 17, 1910, the son of Fred and Thora (Goodman) Wagstaff. Ray enlisted with the RCEME at Calgary, trained there and at Camp Borden before sailing for England. In 1944, he married Bella Porter while in England (she died in 1961). They had one son, Samuel Bernard, who lived in Calgary. On his return to Canada, Ray resided in Calgary until his death in October 1970. He was a mechanic by trade. WAGSTAFF, Robert Thorarin “Bob” WWII Robert was born in Senate, Saskatchewan in October 1916; the son of Fred and Thora (Goodman of Glenboro) Wagstaff. Bob enlisted in the RCAF in Calgary in 1942. He trained there and at St. Thomas where he graduated at the top of his class and remained there as an instructor until his discharge in 1945. He married France Gounce of Surrey, NB while in High River, Alberta in 1947. They took up residence in Calgary until 1967 when they moved to New Brunswick. He passed away on July of 1969 in Saint John, NB. WAGSTAFFE, Charles Percy WWI Charles was born in the RM of Argyle in 1894; the son of Fred Wagstaffe and Gudny (Thordarson). He enlisted in Regina in 1916 and served in the Cavalry. He was sent overseas to England and on to France. He was wounded just before the Armistice and returned to Canada a year later. He filed for a homestead under the Soldiers Settlement Board at Caragana, Saskatchewan. In 1924 he married Grace Cruse of Dauphin, Manitoba and they had one daughter, France Marie Lassen. WALLACE, William WWI William was born in Carlisle, Cumberland, England on April 4, 1890. He joined the Canadian Infantry, Manitoba Regiment, 8th Battalion of the Winnipeg Rifles and was killed in action in France on November 27, 1916. WAUGH, Roy C. WWII Roy was born in Greenway, Manitoba on September 18, 1918, the son of Stella (Cornock) and C.L. Waugh. He enlisted at Winnipeg in 1940, and served in Canada at St. Thomas and Rivers. In 1945, he married Minnie Ogonski and they had three daughters, Susan, Shirley and Judy. They lived in Toronto, Ontario. WELSH, Alvin WWII Alvin, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frederick C. Welsh, was born in Baldur, Manitoba in 1914. He enlisted in the RCAF in Winnipeg in 1941. He trained in Alberta and suffered injuries from which he spent one year in Deer Lodge Military Hospital and was discharged in 1945. Alvin and his wife Margaret resided in Winnipeg and he was employed with Moore’s Printing. They had one daughter and one son. The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND
