251 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca WELSH, George Edward BOER WAR George was born in Fallbrook, Ontario in 1869, the son of Edward and Sophia Welsh. His first wife was Ada Brown (deceased 1899) and he married Dora Barlow in 1906. George enlisted in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1899 and served in the Boer War in South Africa for which he received citation. WELSH, Grant Plyafair WWII Grant was born in Baldur, Manitoba in 1918; the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick C. Welsh. He enlisted at Brandon and took his initial training at Camp Borden; serving a total of four years in all three theaters; which included entering France on D-Day. He was discharged in 1946. On July 26, 1947 he married Christina Jane Williamson. They had one son, Jim, serving at Shilo. After the war, he resided in Deloraine, MB where he was a Grain Buyer for the Manitoba Pool Elevator. WHITFORD, James W. WWII James was born in London, England in 1924. He enlisted in the Royal Navy and served on Mine Sweepers for beaches in Europe during World War II. He was a Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion Lac du Bonnet Branch 164. James passed away in 2017. WILSON, Mark G. AFGHANISTAN & IRAQ Mark was born in Brandon, Manitoba in 1976. He served with the 26 Field Regiment, RCA in Afghanistan and Iraq. He was awarded the US Meritorious Service Medal. Mark is a member of Morden Royal Canadian Legion Branch 11. WRIGHT, Robert Earl WWII Robert was born in Greenway, Manitoba, the son of Margret and James Wright. He enlisted at Portage la Prairie and served in Canada. In 1941 he married Jeannie Pyra of Spears, Saskatchewan. They had three children, Elaine, Brian and Eldyia. He resided in Lorette, Manitoba where he was employed by CNR and operated a small farm. WRIGHT, William Frederick “Bill” PEACETIME Bill was born at Dauphin General Hospital, the son of John and Ettie Wright of Glenora, Manitoba. He served briefly at Calgary and Camp Borden. He attended Brandon Community College. WYLIE, Roy Willard WWII Roy was born in Oxbow, Saskatchewan, the son of James and Rebecca Wylie. He enlisted in Toronto and served as an aeroplane mechanic in Canada for four and a half years. Roy married Ruby McGill on June 9, 1942. They had four children: Barbara, James, Douglas and Betty. Roy resided in Baldur where he was employed with M.T.S. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Baldur Branch 108. WYLIE, Ruby WWII Ruby was born on May 12, 1912, the daughter of William and Annie McGill. She enlisted at Winnipeg and served as telephone operator in Toronto and Quebec. On June 9, 1942, she married Roy Wylie and they had four children, Barbara, James, Douglas and Betty. Ruby was employed as a cook in the Baldur Hospital. YEO, Alfred George “Alf” WWII Alf was born in Stonewall, Manitoba, the son of William John and Emily Yeo. He enlisted at Winnipeg, training there and at Shilo, Borden, Woodstock, Toronto, Esquimalt and Debert before going overseas to serve in England, Scotland, Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. On October 19, 1948, he married Elsey Frederickson and they had one daughter, Debra Louise. YEO, Joseph Earl WWI Joseph was born at Cypress River, the son of Thomas and Rebecca Yeo. He enlisted in Winnipeg on May 9, 1918 in 1st Depot Battalion Manitoba Regiment. In England and France he served with the 8th Battalion. On January 28, 1921, he married Elizabeth Yeo and they had six children, Lois, Glen, Douglas, Constance, William and Jack. Joseph is deceased. YEO, Laurence J. WWI Laurence was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Yeo of Cypress River. He enlisted at Winnipeg and served in Canada. In 1920, he married Bessis Breidal. They retired at Cypress River. ZEMANEK, Joseph F. “Joe” WWII Joe was born on March 11, 1925, the son of Mr. and Mrs. S. Zemanek, formally of Baldur. Joe enlisted in the RCAF at Glenboro on January 23, 1944. He trained at Edmonton, Toronto, Arnprior, St. Thomas, Aylmer, Winnipeg and Moncton before going overseas to serve in England. Joe married Wilma Sevik in Viking on October 29, 1947. They had eight children: John, Mary, Richard, James, Joanne, Christina, Michael and Caroline. Joe was accidentally killed on November 22, 1969.
