249 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca THORGRIMSSON, Heimir WWII Heimir was born in 1907 in Akureyri, Iceland, the son of Reverend Adam and Sigrun Thorgrimsson. He enlisted at MD #10, Winnipeg on July 11, 1940 and served with the 8th Field Ambulance, RCAMC in World War II. He also served in Sicily, Italy and Northwest Europe and was mentioned in Dispatches for outstanding service. On October 26, 1936, he married Laufey May Lindal of Lundar. They had five daughters – Lorna Mae, Pamela, Freda, Ada and Lara. He was active in the Icelandic Community wherever he resided, being a master public speaker, a popular debater and speaker at social functions. He was a member of the Icelandic and Swedish Male Voice Choirs and Senior Choir at First Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Fron Lodge, Icelandic Canadian Club and a past member of the editorial board of the Icelandic Canadian Magazine. In 1943, he was editor of the Logberg Weekly. At the time of his passing, he was VicePresident of the Icelandic National League. Mr. Thorgrimsson served with the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VLA) for 22 years, transferring to the Department of Justice in 1968. He retired in June 1971. He was an original member of the Lundar Branch of The Royal Canadian Legion, transferring to Winnipeg Branch 7 in 1971 and also an original officer and member of the “100” Club. Heimer passed away on December 9, 1971 at Deer Lodge Hospital after a lengthy illness – a victim of cancer. THORLEIFSON, Bjarni Kristinn “Barney” WWII Bjarni was born in Mozart, Saskatchewan, the son of Clemi and Christine Thorleifson. Barney enlisted in the RCAF at Winnipeg on February 10, 1941; trained at Trenton and Brandon before going overseas to serve in England and France. On August 21, 1937 he married Florence Martin. Prior to his death, Barney made his home in Baldur for several years while earning his livelihood as a salesperson. THWAITES, Leslie WWII Leslie was born in Silver Ridge, Manitoba in 1924 and joined the Lord Strathcona’s Horse Regiment, serving in Canada, Britain and Italy. He passed away in 1997 and had been a member of the Elmwood Branch 9 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 25 years. TILL, Earl WWII Earl was born in Miniota, Manitoba in 1924. He joined the Winnipeg Grenadiers and was killed in action in Hong Kong. TRINDER, Frederick Austin “Buster” WWII Buster was born in Lowe Farm, Manitoba, the son of Jack and Elizabeth Trinder. Buster enlisted at Vancouver, BC and trained at Toronto with the RCAF and later at Wetaskawin in the Army. He trained at Boundary Bay, BC; Coal Harbour, Bella Bella; Smithers, BC at Claresholm, AB and also at Calgary and Vernon. On June 25, 1949 he married Elsie Banks; they had three children: Robert William, Eira Ann and Barbara Lee. After the war, he was employed in Maple Ridge, BC as an Arena Supervisor. TRINDER, William J. “Bill” WWII Bill was born in Lowe Farm, Manitoba, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Trinder. He joined the Army at Vancouver in June 1940; training there, at Esquimalt and Petawawa. He served overseas in England, Italy, France, Belgium and Holland. Bill married Gertrude Waitt of Baldur. They have two children - John Bruce and Sharon Elizabeth Gray, both of Winnipeg. Bill was an accountant in Winnipeg. TURNER, Felix Guy WWI Felix was born in Glenora, Manitoba in 1893. He went overseas with the 9th Battalion of the 190th Regiment, returning in 1919 as a Sergeant. He married in 1919. He was a bookkeeper with Wetlaws and Searl Grain Co. from 1919 to 1931 and from 1931 to 1960 he worked with the Accounts Department of the Department of Mines and Natural Resources. He was President of the Puffin Ski Club for eighteen years – also a member of the Winnipeg Ski Club. He passed away in February 1960. TURRILL, George WWI George was a farm-hand in the district of Baldur having come from England in about 1910. He joined the 222nd in Baldur in 1916, receiving his training there and at Camp Hughes and then to England; over to France with the first draft of the 222nd to be sent there early in 1917. He participated with the 8th Battalion (Little Black Devils) at Hill 70, Passchendaele where he received the Military Medal, and also at Amiens, Arras and Cambrai. George returned to Canada in 1919 taking employment on Sexsmith’s Dray in Baldur which he continued until shortly before his death. George was a Life Member and Past President of The Royal Canadian Legion Baldur Branch 108.
