The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 423 WRIGHT, G. Hugh WWII Hugh was born on December 17, 1922 in the Leather River District and attended the Leather River School. He joined the Army in October 1941, went overseas, and was discharged late in 1943, due to health reasons. He worked four summers hauling fuel, and married Edna Slinn in October 1948. He farmed until 1961, when they moved to Ridgedale. He drove a school bus for 14 years and was school caretaker for 24 years. They raised two sons: Roy and Brian. WRIGHT, James Cecil WWI James was born in Ontario. He joined the 44th Battalion on July 26, 1916 and was discharged on July 30, 1919. He came to Saskatchewan in 1913, and went overseas to France and was wounded three times. He returned to England on October 20, 1918. He homesteaded in the Elkdale area. WRIGHT, Joe Austin WWII Joe joined the Royal Canadian Air Force at age 19 at Saskatoon on January 18, 1941. He trained at the Bombing and Gunnery School at Jarvis, Ontario, and went overseas in February 1942 as a rear gunner with the squadron on a Wellington Bomber and was stationed at Bournemouth, England. He was shot down on May 13, 1943, over the English Channel and was reported by the Red Cross as wounded and a POW. It was not until September 13, 1944 that they finally located him and he was repatriated to St. Anne de Bellevue, Quebec, on the SS Gripsholm and then taken to Montreal. He did come home for a short time in 1945. After suffering through many painful ordeals, Joe Austin Wright passed away on July 2, 1995. He received the 1939-45 Star, the Air Crew Europe Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Decoration Medal and Clasp, and the War Medal 1939-45. WRIGHT, James Sherwood WWII James, son of James and Myrtle, was born in Old Nipawin, Saskatchewan, on November 18, 1924. He trained as an air gunner in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942 and was discharged in 1945. After the war, he went to Ontario where his parents were and got married there.
