The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 49 BENJAMIN, Byron Beryl WWII Byron was born in Dundurn, Saskatchewan, in 1919. He joined the Army and served in Belgium, France and Germany. He passed away in 2007. BENNETT, John Irwin “Jack” WWII Jack was born on April 10, 1922 in Carlyle, Saskatchewan. In January of 1942, he went to Regina and volunteered for active service. He was sent to Ottawa for basic training and then to Shilo, Manitoba for advanced training. He went overseas in June of 1943. Early in 1944, he was sent to The Mediterranean and joined the 1st Canadian Armored Brigade, a division of the English Eighth Army. This was just prior to the fall of Mount Casio. In February of 1945, Jack moved to the Western Front, driving through France, Belgium and into Holland by V.E. Day. He returned to Canada in August of 1945 and was discharged that October. Jack passed away on July 6, 2000. BERGER, Barbara WWII Barbara joined the Canadian Women’s Army on August 17, 1942. She was a Corporal stationed in British Columbia during the war. She met and married Charlie Berger there in 1944. She was discharged on September 15, 1945. After the war, they moved back to Langenburg and raised two sons. She helped her husband operate Berger Electric and also had a SGI Insurance Office. She received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the 1939-45 War Medal. BENOIT, J. C. Lionel WWII Lionel was born in St. Louis, SK, in 1924. He joined the Air Force and served in Canada. He received his wings on March 31, 1945, and became a Sergeant. He was the seventh of his family to enlist with the Forces. The others had a tougher time than he had.
