The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 41 BARTON, Craig PEACETIME Craig was born in Moose Jaw, SK, in 1945. He joined the Moose Jaw Base Maintenance and Engineering 447th Squadron, AETE, Moose Jaw Base Rescue and served in Moose Jaw, Edmonton, and Cold Lake, Alberta. He received the Canadian Decoration. Craig passed away in 2009. BAYNTON, Milfred “Mel” WWII Mel was born on July 12, 1918 on a farm in the Piapot District. He spent 5 years overseas with the Army. After the war, he worked at numerous places, including the glass factory in Red Cliff, AB, the post office in Edmonton, a farm in Ontario and finally, as a service man of windmills for the P.F.R.A. until 1979. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #56, the Senior Citizens Activity Centre, the Frontier Bowling Club, the Odds and Ends Band, and the old-time Fiddlers Group. His main hobby was repairing violins, but also enjoyed playing cards and going for coffee. In his early years, Mel rode in several rodeos in Alberta and Saskatchewan. He was a true cowboy at heart. He passed away at the age of 76 on April 23, 1995 in Swift Current, SK and is buried in a Soldier’s Plot at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. BAZLEY, Robert Henry “Harry” WWII Robert was born in Canwood, SK, on June 5, 1920. He enlisted with the 10th Field Ambulance 6th Brigade 2nd Division and took his basic training in Regina and Camp Borden, Ontario, serving in Normandy, France, Belgium, Holland, Hamburg, Germany. He enjoyed his work very much and they provided support services for South Saskatchewan Regiment and two other regiments. As a result of being in the Army, Harry had the opportunity to visit aunts, uncles and cousins in England. BAX, Rene William WWII Rene was born in Luyksgestel, Noord Brabant, Netherlands on December 28, 1919 and enlisted with the VIII RECCE of the Army in 1941 and was discharged on December 20, 1945, after serving in France, Germany, Holland and England. He was a member of the Manor Legion #161 for over fifty years. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the 1939-45 Star, the France-Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the 1939-45 George VII IMP Medal, the Commemoration Medal (awarded to soldiers who fought for the liberation of the Netherlands). Rene passed away on December 24, 2007.
