The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 39 BARBER, William WWII William, son of John Samuel and Amy Barber, was born in Crestwynd, SK, in 1923. He joined the Lake Superior Regiment (Motor) and served in Europe. He was killed in 1945 and is buried in the Groesbeek Canadian Cemetery. On the memorial at Groesbeek are inscribed the following words: Pro amicis mortui amicis vivimus... we live in the hearts of friends for whom we died. BARIBEAU, Alexandre WWII Alexandre was born in November 1921. He enlisted in the Air Force in January 1943 and was discharged in May 1946 after serving in Canada. BARTLEY, R. E. WWII Leroy Ellison was born in Dunblane, SK, in 1920. He enlisted with the Regina Rifles and trained for four years in Canada and Europe before seeing his first action on D-Day, 1944. Roy saw action as far inland as Belgium, where he was wounded at the Ichel River on April 7, 1945. He received the Running Medal-Division Runners-up (Canadian Army Team) 1942, the Running Medal-Division Winners (Canadian Army Team) 1943, the 1939-45 Star, the 1939-45 Defence Medal, the France-Germany Star, the Defence of Britain Medal, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. Leroy passed away in 1998. BARKWELL, James Lorne “Barky” WWII Lorne was born on March 23, 1919, at McDonald Hills, SK. He joined the RCAF in February 1940 and was sent overseas. He became a member of the Caterpillar Club and his life was saved by using his parachute. On his crew’s 4th Operation, their plane was attacked by a German fighter and Barky and two of his crew were wounded by shrapnel. They finally got back to England and crashlanded with no wheels, flaps or gas. Barky received the 1939-45 Star, the Aircrew Europe Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Voluntary 1939-45, the GBR Omn. Rex Etindiacimp 1939-45, the Caterpillar Club Pin, and the British Empire Service League Pin. Barky returned to Canada on leave in October 1944, and married Elsie on November 2, 1944. They had a daughter and two sons. He was discharged from service on February 7, 1945. Lorne has been a member of the Lipton-Dysart Branch #99 of The RCL for 57 years.
