The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 37 BAIRD, Clifford Vandell WWII Clifford was born in Valparaiso, SK, in 1919. He enlisted with the S.L.I and served in the Italian Campaign. After the war, he farmed for a few years, and then was employed with the Saskatchewan Liquor Board in Carrot River and Tisdale, SK. He was active in The Legion and Town Council in both towns. Cliff married Emma Kenny in 1943, and they raised three children. Clifford passed away in 1991 at Tisdale. BANKS, Verne WWII Verne was born in Brancepeth, SK in 1922 and enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force Ghost Squadron. He earned a commission in the RCAF with the rank of Flying Officer. He had been on 118 sea-mining and nightbombing missions over the North Sea and Germany. On the night of April 13, 1945, his aircraft was hit by German anti-aircraft fire. F/S Vardy, Mid Upper Gunner from Bancroft, Ontario had not been seen since he walked to the hatch. A German Red Cross boat came after eleven days and fifteen hours afloat, and the RCAF crew found themselves as prisoners of war in a German hospital. Verne passed away in 1968. BARBER, Morris Newton WWII Morris was born in Saskatoon in 1924 and joined the #12 RCEME serving in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Belgium and Holland as a Driver/Mechanic “C.” He received the 1939-45 Star, the France-Germany Star, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. After the war, he returned to Milden to farm. He was married and raised six children. Morris passed away on February 1, 1999. BARBER, John Sr. WWI John was born in Buttress, SK, in 1894. He joined the 128th Battalion and served in Europe. He passed away in 1955.
