The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 355 WHITFIELD, Newton Melville WWII Newton was born on March 5, 1923 in Alameda, SK. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force on January 14, 1943. On May 2, 1945, he received his Pilot’s Wings and was transferred to the Air Force Reserve Division, Class E. He received his Pilot’s Flying Badge, War Medal, and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp on September 13, 1946. After being discharged he returned to the farm at Alameda where he raised Charolais cattle. Newton and his wife retired in 1998 and moved to Carlyle, SK. He has been a member of Alameda Branch #267 of The Royal Canadian Legion for 64 years. WHITFORD, Alex WWII Alex joined the Army and served overseas during World War II. He passed away in 1981. WHITING, Alfred Thomas WWI Alfred was born in Sandgate, Kent, England, on July 20, 1865. He joined the 16th Light Horse “C” Squadron in 1905, and was discharged in 1914. He then joined the 249th Battalion CEF on November 16, 1916, and was discharged on May 21, 1919, after serving in Canada and England. He emigrated to Canada to take up homesteading in 1886 in the Qu’appelle, SK, area. Upon his retirement in 1935, he moved to British Columbia. He passed away in North Vancouver, BC, on September 15, 1958. WHITFORD, Andrew WWII Andrew joined the Army and served during World War II. He passed away in 1974.
