The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 275 PURSE, James Clarence WWII Jim enlisted as an Ordinary Seaman on December 9, 1942, at HMCS Chippawa in Winnipeg, MB. He was called to active service on March 11, 1943, and served on corvettes as part of the naval convoy escorts to England and Ireland. The living conditions were very basic with few creature comforts. Jim was 6’ 1” when he enlisted and always said that he had permanent dents on his head from trying to duck through the doorways inside the ship. Jim qualified as a signalman in June of 1943, and served on various vessels including the HMCS Stadacona, HMCS Algoma, HMCS Oakville and HMCS Givenchy. He was demobilized on January 25, 1946. Jim passed away in September of 1999. His remains are interred in the Veterans’ Cemetery in Esquimalt, BC, called God’s Acre. QUAYLE, Herbert Montgomery SPECIAL AREA DUTY & PEACETIME Herbert was born in Strangford, County Down, Northern Ireland in 1919; the younger son of Hedley and Mary Quayle. Bert married Rowana Brien in August of 1948, and served with the Home Guard and Air Force during World War II, serving in England and Ireland. The family immigrated to Canada in 1951 and became involved in farming with his uncle John Strain. They had a family of three boys and one girl, and were involved with church and school communities. Bert was a member of Birch Hills Legion Branch #122 for 54 years. He passed away in 2006. QUEWEZANCE, William Joseph WWII William was born in 1905 on the Keeseekoose First Nations Reserve, SK. He enlisted on June 19, 1942, with the Unit 5 C.I.B Workshop, his trade was that of driver mechanic “C.” His rank was Gunner. Bill served in Canada and England until his discharge on May 16, 1944, when he received an honourable discharge. He passed away on August 22, 1982. QUEWEZANCE, Clifford Joseph SPECIAL DUTY AREA Clifford was born on the Keeseekoose First Nations Reserve, SK, on November 22, 1928. He was one of eight children born to William and Alice Quewezance. When he got out of school, he joined the Regina Rifles in the Canadian Army on June 14, 1951, and was stationed in Canada and Germany with the Peace Keeping Forces. He was discharged on January 15, 1953. He then returned to the Keeseekoose First Nation and worked as a farmhand for many of the farmers in the Kamsack and Pelly area. He passed away in Saskatoon on April 25, 1988, and is interned in the St. Philip’s Catholic Cemetery on the Keeseekoose Reserve. He was a member of the Kamsack Legion and the Aboriginal Veterans Association of Saskatchewan for many years.
