The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 259 O’NEILL, Thomas Harold “Harry” WWII Harry was born in Brandon, MB, on March 20, 1913. He was a member of Canada’s non-permanent militia, Saskatchewan Border and Assiniboia Regiments, and was released as a Sergeant Gunner upon enlistment in the RCAF in June 1937. Harry attended Technical and Trade school at RCAF Camp Borden, and was then transferred to #5 Bomber Reconnaissance Squadron at Dartmouth, NS, in 1938, as a qualified aero engine technician. In August 1940, Harry was transferred to No. 1 Bombing and Gunnery school at Jarvis, ON. Harry retired from the RCAF in 1966 to accept a position at the Ontario Science Centre in Toronto. He retired from the Science Centre in 1981 and moved to Ottawa, where he still lives, with his wife Nita. They have been married for 65 years. ORTH, Dale George WWII Dale was born in Laird, SK, on May 4, 1918. He enlisted in the PPCLI in November 1943, and served in England, Africa, Italy, Holland, France and Germany. He went to England on the Queen Mary and returned on the Ile de France in 1946. He received his official discharge with a disability pension in June 1946. Dale is a member of Leask Branch #79 of The Royal Canadian Legion. ORTON, Nelson Richard WWII Nelson was born in Birch Hills, SK, in 1925; the ninth of ten children to Wilfred and Annie Orton. When Nelson finished Grade 12, he enlisted in the Air Force as a navigator and was stationed in England, and later transferred to S. E. India Squadron. Nelson was killed in action in 1945, and is buried at Ranchi War Cemetery in the state Bahar, northwest of Calcutta, India. His liberator was hit by flak overt target during a raid on Bangkok, Thailand. The aircraft made it safely back to base at Dign, Benga,l but he died of his wounds. He was the only fatality. ORTON, Annie Eileen WWII Annie was born in Birch Hills, SK, in 1921; fourth in a family of ten. After high school, she attended normal school in Saskatoon and taught for over two years and then joined the Women’s Division of the RCAF. In the Air Force, she trained as a hospital assistant and after her discharge, she entered the Victoria School of Nursing and graduated in 1950. She taught nursing students in various departments and was later employed as a nursing supervisor until she retired in 1986.
