The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 253 NORDSTROM, Evert Melvin WWII Evert was born in Canwood, SK, in 1920. He joined the Regina Rifles Regiment, 7th Canadian Infantry Brigade, part of the 3rd Canadian Division on June 19, 1940, serving in Holland, France and Belgium. In August 1941, he went on the ship “Empress of Russia” in a convoy of ships to England. He had many close calls and lucky breaks that allowed him to survive many serious battles, while losing many comrades. Evert returned to Europe several times for Canadian Forces Reunions during the 1990’s. NUTT, George Jocelyn WWI George was born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1896. He joined the 196th Western Universities Battalion on March 20, 1916, and served in Canada, England and France. He was discharged sometime in 1919, and received the General Service Medal and the Allied Medal. It is interesting to note that his birth place is Jamaica and that his occupation is bank manager. So many occupations are listed as farmer or labourer. It is unclear how long he stayed in the community of Earl Grey. ODDMUND, Hognestad WWII Hognestad was born in Norway in 1922. He joined the Canadian Army and served three years in Canada and one year overseas. He returned to farm in the Birch Hills area. O’BRIEN (BOYLE), Elsie Myrtle WWII Elsie was born in Canwood, SK, in 1917. She joined the Women’s Army Corps as a Regimental Sergeant Major, serving in Canada. She passed away in 1971.
