The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 235 MELBY, Palmer James WWII Palmer was with the Royal Canadian Engineers as a Sapper Mechanical Equipment Company and served in Canada and France. He was killed in action on October 11, 1944, at age 30, and is buried at Calais Canadian War Cemetery Leubringhen, France. Palmer was the son of Dahl August and Elise Mathilda Melby, who had originally come from Frederickstad, Norway, and homesteaded south of Beaubier, SK, and later moved to a farm in Birch Hills. MENG, Clarence WWI & WWII Clarence was born in Mauston, Wisconsin, USA, in 1892 and immigrated to Canada at the age of 16. He worked at various jobs and filed a homestead in the Waitville district. In 1915, he joined the 53rd Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Forces in WWI, and was transferred to the 42nd Black Watch Highlanders, returning home in 1919. He married Elsie McNabb in 1921, and they raised a family of five girls and five boys. In 1940, Clarence joined the Canadian Army (Active) for service in WWII, and served with the 28th Veterans Guard until 1946, when he returned to farming. He passed away in 1960. MENG, Maurice WWII Maurice was born in Saskatchewan in 1924, one of ten children born to Clarence and Elsie (McNabb) Meng of Crystal Springs. Maurice joined the Army when he was 18 years old, and spent some time in England and Holland. He married Beryl Goberson of High Prairie and they lived in Fort St. John, BC, for some time and raised six children. Maurice passed away in 1974. MENG, Harvey WWII Harvey was born in 1923, one of ten children born to Clarence and Elsie (McNabb) Meng of Crystal Springs. Harvey joined the Navy and spent some time on the west coast. He married Marg Vickers from Ontario, and together they raised eight children. They have retired and are living in Birch Hills.
