The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 201 LAFOND, Benjamin WWII Benjamin was born in Muskeg Lake Cree Nation, SK, on October 13, 1901. He joined the Army and was allocated to 16/22 Saskatchewan Horse on June 30, 1941, serving in Canada. He was discharged on July 24, 1941. LAFOND, Lily Beatrice WWII Lily was born in Muskeg Lake Cree Nation, SK, on November 13, 1924. She joined the Canadian Women’s Army Corps on March 31, 1943, serving in Canada. She was discharged on February 18, 1944, and received the War Medal 1939-45. She passed away on September 13, 1963. LAING, G. Douglas WWII Douglas was born at Dilke, SK, in 1923. He enlisted in the RCAF in 1942, and was stationed in Brandon, Regina, and Saskatoon, where he received his pilot’s wings at S.F.T.S. He also spent time in Boundary Bay, Vancouver and Tofino, BC. He was discharged in 1945 and married Vera McLennan in 1949, and they took over the Laing farm where they raised three sons. They retired to Bethune in 1997. Doug joined the Penzance Legion #226 in 1943, and is now a Life Member of the Bethune Legion #304 of The Royal Canadian Legion. LAING, David Burnett WWII David was born in Brechin, Scotland, on December 9, 1905. He received his schooling in Scotland and came to Canada in 1928 to Swift Current and was employed as a farm labourer. When war was declared, he served with the South Saskatchewan Regiment overseas from 1939-1945. He was wounded in the Dieppe Raid, and returned to Canada in 1945. Following his discharge from the Army, he was employed at the Research Station in Swift Current and was there until he retired in 1970. He held a Life Membership in The Royal Canadian Legion and received many awards including the Palm Leaf. He was also a member of the Elks Eagles and Senior Citizens Club. Davie passed away on February 15, 1990, at 84 years old, and is buried in the Soldier’s Plot at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Swift Current, SK.
