The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 11 AGNEW, Russell William WWII Russell was born in Winton, a district north of Birch Hills, near the South Saskatchewan River where his parents farmed. The family later moved to the Coolidge district where the children went to school and Russell worked in tie and lumber camps. He then married Evelyn Shannon in 1939 and farmed. They raised a family of a boy and three girls. During this time, he spent three years in the Army and little is known about his Army life. ALEXANDER, David James Heslop WWII David was born in Wheatstone, SK, on April 15, 1922. He joined the NRMA, 1st Battalion Rocky Mountain Rangers, North Nova Scotia Highlanders on January 8, 1943, serving in Canada, Kiska, Britain and Northern Continental Europe. He was wounded at the Falaise Gap on September 17, 1944. While recuperating, he wrote a poem “The Fighting North Novas.” He married in Scotland and was discharged on March 22, 1946, returning to Canada to farm. David and his sons received the Saskatchewan Angus Gold Show Commercial Producer Award in 1996. David passed away on March 8, 2001. ALLAN, Lessel WWI Lessel was born in Lumsden, Scotland, in 1890. He enlisted in 1916 with the 116th Saskatchewan Battalion and transferred to the 58th Battalion, serving in England and France. He married Isabella Mutch in Scotland in 1916. He was wounded at Arras, France, in August 1918 and spent four years in hospital in England, Winnipeg and Moose Jaw. After the war, he farmed in the Florentine district and raised three boys and three girls. He belonged to the Tisdale Legion #50 for many years. Lessel passed away at Sherbrooke Nursing Home in Saskatoon in 1981 at the age of 91. ALLAN, Alexander James WWII Alex was born in Cornhill, Scotland, on September 11, 1918. He enlisted with the RCASC 85th Bridge Corps, and served in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He married Violet Mulholland, and they had one son, Jim. Alex worked many years in Post Offices in Tisdale and as Post Master in Porcupine Plain, SK. He and his wife reside in MacKay Tower in Tisdale.
