The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 111 ECKERT, William “Bill” WWII Bill was born in Carlyle, SK. He joined the RCN Volunteer Reserve at HMCS Regina in May of 1943. He took his basic training at Hamilton, ON. He then went to Galt, ON for a course as a machinist and operator of steam boilers. After being stationed in several Canadian Depots he was sent to St. John’s, NL, which was ruled by Great Britain. He was drafted to HMCS Medicine Hat, which was a minesweeper based out of St. John’s. They didn’t have the sweeping gear, but did patrol and escort duty. He served as a Stoker 1st class and spent his time below deck in the Engine Room. He helped to mothball some ships in Halifax and was discharged in 1945. EDENOSTE, Henry WWII Henry joined the 1st Battalion of the Regina Rifle Regiment on May 22, 1941 and served overseas in England. On July 13, 1945, he requested a discharge citing the reason of long service. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. Henry joined the Earl Grey Branch of The Royal Canadian Legion in 1946. EDWARDS, Walter A. “Wally” WWII Walter was born in North Battleford on September 21, 1915 and joined the 1st Battalion of the Regina Rifles Regiment. He received the 1939-45 Star, the Croix de Guerre (France) with Bronze Star, the Netherlands Bronze Cross Swords, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the 1939-45 War Medal, and the Military Efficiency Service Medal. Wally passed away in 1980 after a long battle with cancer. EDGE, Leslie WWII Leslie was born in Birch Hills in the 1920’s to Mr. and Mrs. Edward Edge, who had emigrated from Ireland in 1907 and moved to the USA. Leslie was one of nine children born to the couple. The children attended Fisher School, which was only a half-mile from their farm. Leslie enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in several locations across Canada. After the war, he married and settled in Winnipeg.
